The section of river in town is for the most part open, with just ice on the banks. I figured I'd go get my license today and head out to my 'usual' spot about 5 or so miles out of town (upstream). The report from the flyshop simply said parts of the river were starting to open up. I picked up some San Juan Worms and a couple Buggers and figured I'd head up to my spot for some scouting. I figured that 5 miles up should look about the same as what is in town.
I was wrong. Still too much ice. There were a couple spots of open water, but nothing to get excited about. I didn't even string up. I just walked around and checked out the area. It still needs a couple more weeks. I guess I'm going skiing tomorrow.
Heading out of town this afternoon
Stopped by my local shop
WYO Hwy 230 heading towards the Colorado line
The turnoff - a little snow on the ground, but I was still optimistic
Pulling through the Monolith Ranch, saw some locals
First glimpse of the river... not looking good
At least I'm legal. Wyoming has some fancy new licenses this year
One of my favorite riffles with about a parking space worth of open water
Looking up a good section
Remembering those who fished before us
Another section
I was watching this spot, hoping to see a trout peek out to say hi
More ice
I know it will be open soon... just waiting...
