recipe for disaster: drug testing ultimate players

so the whole drug testing thing has gone VERY mainstream. there will be random checks on almost every ultimate team in every division at this years' world (country) ultimate championships held in finland this august. they'll best testing for not only perfromane enhancing drugs, but also recreational ones. definitely a recipe for disaster for the sport if players don't take it seriously enough. i think that most people will be able to abstain from the recreationals stuff, but how can very amateur athletes be expected to monitor all the other stuff, pros can't even get it right! [/rant]

fwiw- i'll be playing on the great britain national team, eligible since i'll been living here for over 2 years.

Nice work getting selected. You are now following in the footsteps of Zola Budd, Greg Rusedski and Lennox Lewis. All we need to do now is to convince FIFA that Thierry Henry has lived here for over two years and has an English surname and we should be all set for Euro2004.

i hear that Edu is trying to get nationalized to solve England's left side of mid-field problem. he's never played for brazil at any level, and at least he's a natural lefty unlike lampard/gerrard/anyone else that didn't run off to wales (giggs).

now this needs to be filed under things you never thought you would see.

I mean, fer christ sake, if it weren't for stoners, there probably wouldnt be ultimate.

exactly, how can you have 'spirit of the game' (make your own calls, etc) if everyone's not chilled out? i suspect a 3x increase in fistfights!

    something interesting where I live...

We got lots of ex-stoners in the enlisted branches of the military, and it's wierd to see them still kind of clinging on to that high school identity 3 and 4 years after they've left high school. Usually that's the kind that don't particularly like their job and can't wait for their enlistment to expire. It's even more interesting to hear them describe their friends back home, deadbeat potheads still living at home, and they want to return to that too. Anyway, I digress.

My point is, none of 'em have been to college, so they haven't heard of ultimate at all. I'm trying to teach people, but it's not really catching on at all. All the stoners still do the hacky sack thing...guys, time to move on, there's something better!

It's like somebody took a freeze-frame at the junior high level, and put those kids to work...

You guys don't fist fight? We must have a different interpretation of "Spirit of the Game" .

Just Kidding, sort of. It almost comes to blows sometimes.

Congrats on the bid for nationals, that is sweet. I am trying out for the Tampa Bulge, our club team here. I have only been playing since Jan., but I have already been recruited by several of the better players. I play in a league every wed. night.

Unfortunately after finding out that he would be able to play for the English Side, Henry would clank three balls off the post, take a dive, and flagrantly foul an argentinian getting him sent off.

Hmm, I automatically assumed anyone not testing positive would be thrown out.

Ha, yeah it is a strange name. It's an Ultimate thing. The ladies team has a better name. They are the Huckaneers. I am not sure who came up with our name.

good luck down in tampa. florida has always had a lot of very talented players, but they always seemed spread out b/t miami, gainsville, and tampa. last i had heard, they broke up the whole 'florida' thing and gone w/ city based teams (which is probably a good call in the long run).

i used to play for new york before i moved to london 2 years ago, so i unfortunately know about fist-fights in ultimate. i've had to tone down my own vibe since i've gotten over here, and i was one of the peacemakers on that team! the game is exploding in the u.k. (which now dominates european ultimate), i just hope they can keep it rolling.

I tried playing ultimate at with the team at school, but couldn't get into it. No offense or anything, but it's really kind of a pussy sport. No contact of any kind. And I didn't really fit in with the people on the team, I was the one with the filthy mouth that wanted to play half in the bag, no one else was down with that. I would love to join the rugby team, but they are too much the opposite. They are the ones partying every night. You want a good party at UPJ? Skip the frats, go to the rugby house. Unfortunatly, aside from partying, they also love to beat the hell out of anyone that looks at them the wrong way, which isn't something I am down with. So needless to say now I just ski.

well, i started playing very late in college. i played b-ball every day, 3 hours/day w/ all the big boys, but after a rash of people getting the crap beat out of them, i decided that i'd try something a bit more laid back. i far perfer the club scene to the college one.

is this for real?? i play a fair amount of ulty here in the bay area, and all the good club teams (Jam, Condors, etc) that I have played w/or against enjoy the post-game smoke session and a few cold ones.....it seems to go hand in hand w/the sport....i can't imagine why they would institute this, I mean, its a frickin' game, and true that at this level its serious, but I highly doubt that anyone would take Ulty so seriously as to dope like cyclists and ball players, etc, b/c there is no $ in the sport.....its a past-time, not a pro sport.....this is ridiculous.....

Isn't that the game where the girls teams play topless? Well in B.C. anyway. I guess there's a drug connection there.

Now I know what your moniker means...

There are fewer and fewer places left in the world to safely deviate these days.

Why do they test for recreationals when they test athletes for perf enhancing drugs?

    Hey PaSucks-

Sounds like the guys playing at your school were the pussies. No contact of any kind? Yeah- just like soccer. Trust me, there is plenty of contact. I played rugby too. When you hit 30 or so, you welcome the intentional contact limitation. Try the sport again, I think you will have a different opinion. I spend every wed. night running my ass off for 1 1/2 hours and getting my ass kicked by hitting the ground at full layout at full speed. While it ain't rugby, it is a hell of a workout. On par with soccer. Play club- it is better.
