i'm leaving for the philippines tommorow at 8:30pm and the person i'm supposed to go with just called me to say that he might have to bail because he got himself into a heap of trouble drunk a couple nights ago. i'm pretty dissapointed, but fucked if i'm going let this ruin my vacation.

WWMD? stick with the plan and just give'r? shit.

    what a fucker.

thanks buddy. i'm not trusting my happiness in his hands, just incredibly dissapointed that the person that i've been planning to go on this trip with for a couple months could be such a bonehead. i've already told him that i'm not in any way postponing this trip.

life goes on, the beaches are going to be beautiful as are the women.

As has already been pointed out, travelling alone rules!! Go for it, tell your buddy he is a weeney.

Bring back an STD (in a jar of course) and spread it liberally on his toilet seat when you get back.

My new sig. I've been thinking that this is the best way to converse with all the unhappy, fat, bitter trolls out there who are blaming somebody or something else for their unhappiness.

This same thing happened to me while living in London. I had a trip planned to go to Corfu(Greece) with a group called Club 18-30(London Mags can fill in the blanks on this one). It was a sweet deal, and we had 3-4 people going. Well, one by one they dropped out. I said fuck it, when am I going to be able to get to Greece again?

Best time of my life. Being alone and being lonely are two different things. Do what you want, when you want, with no discussion. That is the way to travel. Be friendly and outgoing, and smart about the situations you get yourself into.

The Canadian flag thing might not be a bad idea either, unfortunately.

Really. So when Abu Sayyaf sees his Canadian passport, they will apologize profusely and release him, right?

I travel alone alot and enjoy it, even internationally. It is great self discovery time and you can do whatever whenever. The only part that sucks is not having anyone to split costs with.
I'd kick his but just for the hell of it.

With a 45% HIV infection rate amongst Manila's prostitutes, your mate may have done the right thing if he can't control himself when he's had a few to drink...

Traveling alone really is great once you "break the ice" and do it. You can change plans/itinerary at a moments notice without consulting anyone, hook up with other groups for adventures, etc.
Sew a French or Spanish flag on your pack..

Abu Sayyaf rarely extends their terror beyond Mindinao & Americans for the most part are well liked in the Philippines anyhow.

The point I am making is that the one big thing you give up when traveling alone is a level of security - when you are alone you are much more vulnerable. You must compensate for this by being aware and not putting yourself in bad situations.

    and the shitstorm continues...

going at it solo but the travel agent when cancelling my friends ticket cancelled mine as well and couldn't rebook me onto another flight until tommorow afternoon. so instead of arriving in manila at 11am i am now arriving at midnight. luckily i convinced her to put me up in a hotel and arrange for an airport transfer...so my intro to the philippines will be pretty luxurious.

what a bumpy road this has been.

to those saying sew a canadian flag on my backpack: no way. i don't want to be identified that way and everyone knows the only people who sew canadian flags on their backpacks are Americans and dorky canadians. ever see that Timmy Ho's commercial? fuck. if someone is going to mistreat you they are going to do regardless of whether or not you are bearing flags on your back. a westerner is a westerner and to a thief or a kidnapper we all have money and things they want.
