    Atmosphere...Greasted Rapper Out There?

Okay, that might be going a bit far, but Sean Daly (aka Slug, aka 1/2 of Atmosphere) is one of the keenest MCs on the scene.

He's made a nice growth chart since his debut some 10 years ago, maturing and refining his craft with each effort.

If you're not up on him, peep this free download...it's pretty butter (listened to it on repeat on the way back from Mt. Rose on Sunday...yeah it's that good):

Honestly, his beats are pretty lame and I just can't get into his lyrics. I saw him live a couple months ago and I was bored...not to mention his shows draw a huge underage crowd.

Fuck that. It was Vanilla Ice.

Greatest self esteem ever? I am in no place to say who is the greatest ever, cause I simply have not listened to enough rappers, but wayne is pretty fucking amazing.

I liked the god loves ugly album.

Nanuq, quit cunting up every thread with your garbage. We know old losers like yourself never got rap, but vanilla ice jokes are beyond played, you fucking tool.

its on my player all the fucking time. for some reason i can't stop listening to atmosphere/ant/slug. check P.O.S. too. slug and murs do a sweet collaboration "felt" I have been diggin most of the Rhymesayers line up, including Brother Ali. Atmosphere has volumes of albums/mixes. Listen to his first album "outcast" and then realize its 10 years old. pretty solid. "seven's travels' is my favority album.

new album coming out in april named:

"When life gives you lemons, you paint that shit gold"
More fucked up than a cricket in a hubcap

Atmosphere is definitely in my top tier favorites and sees heavy rotation in my deck.

BUT - Greatest ever? Definitely not. Possibly a contender for second or third greatest still living, but KRS reigns supreme without contest.

    Is he a Chinese Greasted?

Not really part of this discussion, but: anyone else have the Dyme Def Space Music album? I think that's pretty hot.

You act surprised. Atmosphere has been killin it for years. I saw them at the Ogden, maybe, five years ago. Brother Ali opened for em. One of the biggest crowds i'd seen at that place.

And "vanilla ice"? God,you get dumber and dumber
    So local it hurts...

    "Dyme Def Space Music"

not up on that, gonna have to peep it out.

As for Atmosphere, I'm also digging Headshots.

And Sage Francis is indeed cool, as well.

I've been into the whole rap scene since my college days (was the first DJ to host an all rap show on KCPR, San Luis Obispo), and parlayed that into a career as a music journalist (wrote almost exclusively about rap for more than a decade and have chilled out with 3rd Bass, Public Enemy, Ice Cube, KRS, Organized Konfusion, Digital Underground, Del, Too $hort, Ice-T, Cypress Hill, Common-when-he-was-Common Sense, and too many others to recount here).

I have to say that Atmosphere and Sage live were some of the best shows I have ever seen. They both have excellent microphone skills (they know how to use a mic so they aren't screaming or being dropped out), they know how to work a crowd, and above all the keep it real (they aren't into the bling-bling/gangsta gangsta posturing).

At any rate I found Strictly Leakage (the download link I posted at the beginning of the thread) to be incredibly tight, both in terms of beats and lyrics.

I especially loved how he jacked an Ice Cube beat and then mimicked Cube's flow on one track and how he re-wrote Kool G Rap's "Road To The Riches." That's some homage shit of top caliber right there. Plus it shows that he knows how to give props and pay respect to his elders, something which very few rap cats these days take the time to do.

    ^hmmm.

I'd have the following on my list (but for the record I hate the restrictions of such lists):

    Rakim
    Wise Intelligent
    Ice Cube
    Q-Tip
    Slug
EPMD (as a tag-team they couldn't be beat)
    Lakim Shabazz
    YZ
    Del
    E-40
    Masta Ace
Guru (calm and wild with his monotone style)

Lyrically, nobody out right now can even touch lil wayne. And I was listening to the Lox on Black Robs album......like 8 years ago.

This is a good list, I would pick some others maybe...

    BUT...

Lil Wayne is for sure way down on that list ... I would put a bunch in front of him, but if I am going to pick one: Biggie. And no Snoop?

If you know your history, then you would know where you coming from, then you wouldn't have to ask me, who the heck do I think I am.

personally I'm partial to Step In The Arena, easily one of the greatest albums ever regardless of genre.

Gangstarr and Jazzmatazz were some of the best shit to come out of the 90s. Guru also introduced me to N'dea Davenport whose voice haunted me through my formative years.

I've been trying to come up with a greatest hip-hop album of the 90s in my brain, and Hard to Earn is always near the top. I was thinking of starting a thread, but it would just be a bunch of posts with lists in them that nobody reads.
Remind me. We'll send him a red cap and a Speedo.

Gotta disagree. Low End Theory is the superior ATCQ album.

And where is the Mighty Mos Def on this so-called greatest list?
    Montani Semper Liberi
