PS: Classics From The Late '80s/Early '90s (because every true head knows that rap music died after 1992)

Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique (if only for production alone)
    EPMD - Strictly Business
Public Enemy - Yo! Bumrush The Show
Boogie Down Productions - Ghetto Music The Blueprint of Hip-Hop (the REAL blueprint)
    Cypress Hill - Cypress Hill
    Wu-Tang Clan - Enter The Wu-Tang Clan 36 Chambers
LL Cool J - Mama Said Knock You Out
De La Soul - 3 Feet High and Rising
Jungle Brothers - Straight Out The Jungle
    ATCQ - Low End Theory
Queen Latifah - All Hail The Queen
Ice Cube - Amerikkka's Most Wanted
    NWA - Straight Outta Compton
Too $hort - $hort Dog's In The House (both the clean and dirty versions as they offered up different tracks)
Del the funky homosapien - Wish My Brother George Was Here
Gang Starr - Step In The Arena
Poor Righteous Teachers - Holy Intellect
Low Profile - We're In This Together
WC and the MAAD Circle - Ain't A Damn Thing Changed

that's just off the top of the dome and by no means a complete list, but these are all albums that I still bump with regularity some 20 years down the road. Timeless classics all and representative of when the genre was fresh, innovative, and cutting edge beyond compare. Rap from 1985 - 1992 was the REAL alternative music. Especially for a bugged out suburban can such as myself.

People should learn endurance; they should learn to endure the discomforts of heat and cold, hunger and thirst; they should learn to be patient when receiving abuse and scorn; for it is the practice of endurance that quenches the fire of worldly passions which is burning up their bodies.

I've been listening to them since they started out here (mpls) and they have gotten progressively worse. Sell outs in the underground, if that's possible. If i had a nickel for every preppy ass kid at my school who asked me if I listen to atmosphere I'd have enough nickels for change and tuition. Atmosphere is the Abercrombie and fitch of "underground" hip hop.

that is actually true about the preppy kid info. For some reason, atmospheres lyrics appeal to what the preppy kids really arent. SO everyone whoe likes Atmosphere should try out aesop rock , cannibal ox , living legends , and others. RJD2 has some good instumental stuff with aesop flowing

That's the most retarded thing I've heard in quite some time.

So you're labeling Atmosphere as sell outs just because their fanbase are Abercrombie douchebags?

By that reasoning then N.W.A. were sell-outs since a large percentage of the people who bought their albums were white kids from the 'burbs.

By that reasoning Jay-Z would be sell out since he's always on the Billboard charts and again a large percentage of his audience is Gap wearing yuppie kids.

I'mma be hanging out with Slug in Austin next week so I'll make sure to check the label on his clothing (gonna bet it ain't A&F, AE or Gap).

The bottomline is that as an artist you can't choose your fans. You can only put out the best music (or art or writing or acting) possible, tailored to your own style and hope for the best.

Rockin' the boulevard and reaching the bourgeosie, baby!

actually it's the hip/hop show that starts at 10pm EST every night and you can stream it. They play some great rap stuff and I'm really not a big fan but good tunes is good tunes regardless of genre.

PRT are one of the most underrated crews ever.

Wise Intelligent had the sickest flow, mixing a mutant dancehall patois with New Jersey grime. Their first album is still a bona fide forgotten classic. Too bad it's virtually impossible to score these days.

There is some fucked up shit in this thread.

First, Slug is as emo as sage, and actually more so, ESPECIALLY some of his last stuff. Holy shit that crap sucks. So calling out sage but not slug is ridiculous.

Second, Tuffy, are you saying that Slug is number #2 then?!?!

Third, Funkendrenchman, Ant makes sick beats, period. You can argue Slug's ability as much as you want, but if you can't feel Ant you should give up on music. Or maybe just stick to Linkin Park.

Fourth, the title of this thread is retarded coming from a paid music 'critic'. Sure, I like Slug (except for that Sad Clown crap), but c'mon.

Fifth, I do see where SunCountry is coming from. The A+E crowd in Atmosphere concerts may have been around (only a bit) before the 'emo clown' schtick, but now they're here to stay. He didn't pick them, but he fucking seemed to tailor to them with that clown crap.

(And I'll prolly buy his next one just in case I'm missing out, so fuck me anyways.)

One counterpoint to the "you can't choose your fans..." line of logic: many old school punk acts were straight up hostile towards people coming to their shows who they didn't deem worthy or who they just didn't want as fans. snobbery is lame in my book, but so is letting cash influence your art - both are realities if you want a full time job in the music biz. My point is that slug probably uses more caution in his lyrics than you might think and to keep from scaring off too many of the preppy kids - it's that fine line any "edgy" product walks of staying "dangerous" without going past the limits of those they court.

Why have I not heard mention of Brother Ali and Lyrics Born in this discussion?
