Abstinence Only Education - How it really works

I am currently reading the book "Kingdom Coming" by Michelle Goldberg. It is about the rise of Christian Nationalism in the USA.

The following is from the book (I am typing, so forgive any typos or such).

the backstory - Pam Stenzel has a degree in psychology from Jerry Falwell's Liberty University and was appointed by George W. Bush to head a 12 person panel dedicated to abstinence only eductaion for kids in US schools. And now, a wonderful little gem showing just where those tax dollars are going. Also, it should be noted that "Reclaiming America for Christ" is a radical two day seminar for Christian Nationalists who want to bring America into the realm of Christian Taliban methodologies. Fringe element? Not when you see that those who George W. has set up with powerful positions in the current regime. Scary and bone chilling. And now the quote from the book:

...At "Reclaiming America for Christ," Stenzel told her audience about a conversation she'd had with a skeptical businessman on an airplane. The man asked about the abstinence education's success rate - a question she regarded as risible. "What he's asking," she said, "is does it work. You know what? Doesn't matter. Cause guess what. My job is not to keep teenagers from having sex. The public schools' job should not be to keep teens from having sex."

The her voice rose and turned angry as she shouted, "Our job should be to tell kids the truth!"

"People of God," she cride, "can I beg you, to commit yourself to truth, not what works! To Truth! I don't care if it works, because at the end of the day I'm not answering to you, I'm answering to God!"

Later in the same talk, she explained further why what "works" isn't what's important - and gave some insight into what she means by "truth." "Let me tell you something, people of God, that is radical, and I can only say it here," she said, " AIDS is not the enemy. HPV and a hysterectomy is not the enemy. My child believing that they can shake their fist in the face of a holy God and sin without consequence, and my child spending eternity separated from God, IS the enemy. I will NOT teach my child that they can sin safely."

    The crowd applauded.

Of course, Stenzel isn't just teaching her child
    ...

This is from "Kingdom Coming A Rise of Christian Nationalism" by Michelle Goldberg.

This isn't fiction folks. And if anyone wants to pay Pam a visit,

Mrs Stenzel sounds like a real party pooper. I bet she was gangbanged at an early age and is trying to redeem herself in god's eyes.

Christianity is right up there with Islam in my book for having a slippery snakeskin slope. So many people raised in it or brought into it in any developmental stage end up lacking the mental faculties to think for themselves. They don't know what rules they should follow, so they fervently follow the highest common denominator- the most legalistic rules that they are exposed to.

It is a snakeskin slope in that once someone goes to far down the line they almost never come back to reality.

So if you're not trying to make sex-abstinence teaching actually "work," then you're just proselytizing your religion, right?

FUCK YEAH. That whore came and talked at my high school...

I remember it well. Her main shtick was this "you will pay" routine, trying to scare us out of having sex.

    Touching boobs...you will pay

    Heavy petting...you will pay

    Unclean thoughts...YOU WILL PAY

    Her routine is pathetic.

edit: fuck this self righteous bullshit

That video needs a fact checker....

I find the average STD's in pregnant girls = 2.3 fact outrageous.

Fear Mongering bullshit. I would have seen through this at age 12 - not helping anything.

Shes a fairly effective speaker. He pace, snide remarks and delivery are really effective and if she strikes the right nerve it could be really powerful and beneficial.

If only it wasn't fear mongering, inaccurate and the rant of a religious radical (seriously, its not as bad as blowing up buildings but its the same sentiment.)

The truth of god. She's a giant flaming cunt, spewing bullshit left and right.

So I'm going to try and answer my own question on the aids epidmenic and her claims of condom use and the transfer rate of STDs, specifically her claims on AIDS. Using wikipedia as a launching point...

    Quote:
it is now a pandemic, with an estimated 33.2 million people now living with the disease worldwide

    Quote:
A third of these deaths are occurring in sub-Saharan Africa

    Quote:
The best evidence to date indicates that typical condom use reduces the risk of heterosexual HIV transmission by approximately 80% over the long-term, though the benefit is likely to be higher if condoms are used correctly on every occasion.
Cayley, W. E. Jr. (2004). "Effectiveness of condoms in reducing heterosexual transmission of HIV". Am. Fam. Physician 70 (7): 1268–1269. PMID 15508535

    Quote:
With consistent and correct use of condoms, there is a very low risk of HIV infection. Studies on couples where one partner is infected show that with consistent condom use, HIV infection rates for the uninfected partner are below 1% per year.

    Receptive penile-vaginal intercourse* 10
    Insertive penile-vaginal intercourse* 5
    * assuming no condom use

So lets start making a couple assumptions.
    1) A couple has sex 50 times a year.
    2) Transmission rates without a condom are 5/10000=.05%
    Both of these are conservative.

So without a condom, over the course of the year, the partner without aids will have a 2.5% chance of becoming infected.
With a condom they have a 1% chance of becoming infected.

Another assumption: Only 25% of people in subsaharan africa that are infected are having sex with people who are uninfected.

    This makes about 2,767,000 couples.

With a 1% transmission rate, that's 27,670 new infections due to sexual intercourse a year.
    With a 2.5% transmission rate, it's 69,175 new infections.

A difference of 41,505 infections per year.

That's 41,505 death sentences that could be prevented with condom use. Even if 10% of these infections could have been prevented if not for religous bullshit, that's over 4000 deaths a year caused by religous propaganda. 2,998 people were killed on 9/11/2001 due to the terrorist attacks. So her self rightceous bullshit rhetoric is just a disgusting nonsensical rant. And her hidden religious claims of the sanctity of life just got blown out of the fucking water. (And also her 'hidden' views on the Iraq War and the deaths there.)

Please correct me if I screwed up the math anywhere or if you think I made any incorrect assumptions/logical errors.

Nanug- the sexuality class I took at CU had some insight into the math you just did.

Turns out the rate of HIV transmission female to male is incredibly, incredibly low (for penile-vaginal intercourse).

Male to female is much, much higher.

That part of the statistic has been brushed under the carpet so to speak since it was discovered because many in the medical community thought it would promote a lot of guys not using protection because their odds are actually pretty damn good that they won't ever get aids from penile-vaginal intercourse.

Just watched part four of that stupid fucking video. She butchers so many fucking statistics. I'm infuriated. She is such a dumb fear mongering bitch.

All her talk about HPV was entirely inaccurate. Yes, there are over 100 strands of HPV. Yes, most of the human population is infected with it. In fact, it is as common as the rhino virus- the common fucking cold. Only a small number of the strains are sexually transmitted anyway and this dumb bitch is telling high school students that the vaccine is ineffective because it only protects against 4 strains of the over 100 strains (these particular strains happen to account for 75-90% of cervical cancer).

What drives me more crazy than anything- that these fundamentalist nut jobs are so blinded by their religion that they find it necessary to deprive others of the truth. They have lost all hope in the ability for humans to make rational decisions on their own based on informed decisions and instead impose their will on every single person that they are exposing to talks like those. It as disgusting as the religion that they are so fervently clinging to.

You are correct about this, and also correct about the reason it was brushed under the rug.

People like Pam Stenzel are the strongest evidence out there of the need for abortions. I should not read threads like this, they only get me violent.

Teaching critical thinking skills in school would be really helpful, but having a President who (rabidly) encourages this kind of crap is just shameful.

DETAILS magazine had an interesting article on this, and how the general AIDS fighting campaigns is horribly misguided in this country. But they stressed the point that it is almost impossible to get infected female to male, and even the other way with normal vaginal intercourse has a relatively low rate of transmission. It is the pooperhausen that does them all in. I think they said that if a man claimed he was infected by some girl he had on the side, he is not telling the truth and was taking it in the ass instead.

And that is the thing, the more research I do and the more I read, it is glaringly apparent that George W has turned the executive branch into a evangenlical/fundamental Christian branch. And the fact these fucking evil pricks are being paid with our tax dollars to spew this vile is just one more nail in the coffin of what was once a great country.

    Sickens me to no end.

And many thanks to all for the details and comments on my math and stats.

You guys all miss the point, she is teaching the "truth", so it doesn't matter if her facts are accurate or not. God instructed us not to have premarital sex, and this is just our punishment, so take it like a man, beg for gods forgiveness, and make a large cash donation to the Christian ministry or your choice.

I would have thought that what most teens are afraid of is premature ejaculation.

How did I survive my teens years without this fat joke to enlight me ?

As a teen I was most afraid of Catholic dads.

    Not afraid enough, though...
