PT for Open Bankart Shoulder Repair

So it has been 2 weeks since surgery and I have started PT. The guy gave me 5 exercises to start with. I see him again in 1 week. The exercises are:

-Supine External Rotation (lie on back arm at 45 degrees out from body and pulling back of hand away from chest towards floor)
    -Fingerwalks
-Some kinda of shoulder blade squeezes
-Extension with external rotation (bringing my arm back like i am bowling)
-45 degree arm raise (basically lying on back punching the ceiling with hands together making one big fist).

My exercises consist of a couple with External Rotation. My surgeon kept telling me to keep my arm out of any external rotation positions. Does this seem strange to anyone else? I am concerned it may be too much too fast?

    drmark,

I understand you stress to keep the arm out of external rotation for 6 weeks. Is this Supine External Rotation too much?

If I was any more aggressive, I would be a pro wrestler, but I don''t permit my patients to do any ext. rotation beyond 20 degrees, when the arm is at the side, and they can do not resisited internal rotation for six weeks. Elevation of the arm in front of you is good and safe too. Scapular exercises are a must. EX. rotation? That could tear out the doc's good work.

Glad to hear you had an open Bankart. They work far better than the A-scope ones, and the pain, despite the hype, is no different.

Beats me. Well that is no good. The guy has an office here in downtown Minneapolis and has been PTing for 20 years. I would hope I could trust him.
