Thas fo sho. Nutritionists commonly spell kcals as "calories," but if they were technically correct they would spell it "Calories" with a capital "C."Originally posted by Snow Dog
Still more trivia: Food energy is measured in kilocalories, which is abbreviated to kcalories, and nutritionists spell as "calories".
Or one milliliter in this case. One ml of water weighs exactly one gm.Originally posted by Snow Dog
A calorie is the amount of heat necessary to raise one gram of water one degree C.
As much as I hated some of those classes, I guess some of the information stuck. And who knew it would someday be so useful on a ski message board...
If you're worried about replenishing protien stores after a vigorous workout, just eat a well balanced meal.
If you are dead set on going the protien shake route, just drink a LOT of water to help your kidneys out. All the chemicals/amino-acids/trace minerals/etc. in most protien shakes tax your kidneys.
If you've ever had a kidney stone, you'll quickly become a believer in taking care of your kidneys. Passing a kidney stone is like trying to piss a red hot nugget of lava.
Of all the muthafuckas on earth, you the muthafuckest.

I read an article in Outside a few years ago where at trainer for the US Cycling team was interviewed. He kept talking about a "glycogen window". It was something like an hour long after a workout where he had his athletes eat a high sugar food to bring back their glycogen levels. He mentioned pop tarts as a good source. He eventually came up with his own line of supplements that I have seen in the Performance Bike catalog.Originally posted by Mountainman
are there any specific products to take before or after biking that will help with the muscle endurance?
After a long mountain bike ride I like to eat a handful of jelly beans and then a protein drink. That usually brings back my some of my energy.
I know some people swear by creatine, but from my experience it doesn't do anything for me. Also I guess the loading phase is bogus.
I brought this point up earlier in the thread. There's suppose to be an hour or two post excercise when skeletal muscle takes up blood glucose at an accelerated rate and this is in response to glucose depletion from the excercise. Your best bet, if you try this recovery method, would probably be to ingest a recovery drink with lots of glucose in it, as oppose to sucrose or fructose, as glucose will enter the blood stream and get to muscle quicker. One caveat is that you'll provoke an insulin response that may leave you sleepy.Originally posted by Grange

I worked out religiously for a good 6 months, 5 days a week 2-3 hours a day. I can say the Whey Protein helped me out a lot. I would drink a shake before I worked out, it didn't make me lift better but it made me be able to work out every day. It took away that" I feel like I am going to die" soreness.
If I remember right the formula to use for how many grams of protein you should intake a day is from .7 to 2 per pound of body weight. My daily intake was around 200 grams a day, I weighed around 150.
I tried getting that amount from foods which was damn near impossible, I ate my poor mother out of food in just a few days.
Slam water every day drink a good 8 full glasses otherwise you will blow an O ring trust me on this one. No one would sit near me after I drank the protein powder.
Ok Ok I am ranting way to much but get a brand name product, the FDA doesn't regulate suppliments. They can throw anything into a bottle as long as they put "Not proven to reduce the risk of cancer" or something like that.
Just get your ass into the weight room as much as you can and learn good tech and you'll go far.
