    Question for ice climbing mags...

Don't know where this belongs - but its skiing related. Hey ice climbing mags, I am looking for a cheap ice screw to use for kite skiing as an anchor for the kite. I have been told by other climbers (I'm not one) that there are probably some old "Russian" titanium screws out there that I might be able to pick up for cheap.

Any suggestions on where to find an old screw for a few bucks?

    Thanks.

Do you realize that you've just posted an admission of ignorance so breathtaking that it disqualifies you from commenting on any political or economic threads from here on out?

I've seen old CAMP ice screws at military surplus stores alot lately for about $8. If you want I could get you some and ship them.

I haven't seen them in 10 years (though i haven't been looking for them). They use to have the problem of being too short and the threads were too small so they tended to melt out of the placements.

Thanks for the responses - length and condition really aren't that important since no lives are on the line. This is just to hold the kite down while I untangle/adjust lines. Initially I looked at icefishing gear, but most of the anchors require a 6'' hole with an auger - I've also tried lag screws which didn't hold.

I'll check the local army surplus... good idea. Thanks for the offer Chugachjed - it would be nice to find them local to avoid postage, but I'll let you know if I can't find any around here.

Not sure where you live in Colorado but I have some OmegaPacific screws I bought here on TGR for leavers and anchors that I've never used. I would part with one in exchange for a couple of PBRs.

If its going into hardpack, not ice. How about the anchors that looks like a big corkscrew. I've seen those at harbor freight for pretty cheap.

I used IRBIS brand Titanium ice screws, they are not the greatest for straight up ice climbing, but for what your looking for they would be great. New they cost between $10 and $13 each. You should be able to find some on ebay for cheap.

Lightbulb Err, ever heard of a v-thread?

Learn how to put in a v-thread with a 22cm ice screw. Use 1 for an ice screw equivalent, or for a bomber anchor, use 2 equal-tensioned in the different ice systems.
