How did I leave out Harold and Maude?
How did I leave out Harold and Maude?
Yetimang posted it on the first page.
No love for Welles' "Touch of Evil?" That is by far my favorite film. Also for the list:
The Searchers
Shawshank Redemption (Not old, but neither are most of the films listed here)
Manchurian Candidate (Sinatra's best)
The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly
The Godfather series
The Exorcist
Jaws
Lawrence of Arabia
"A face In The Crowd" Andy Griffith, Patricia Neal and Walter Mathau, Tony Francioso.
I have recently watched and thoroughly enjoyed the following:
Sunset Boulevard (classic classic classic, a must-see)
The Swimmer (existential yarn about the melting of the American dream)
The Comfort of Strangers (classic bugged out Christopher Walken performance)
Le Samurai
Un Flic
Le Deuxieme Souffle
(Jean-Pierre Melville was the king of detached, ultra cool French noir)
The Lavender Hill Mob (vintage early Alec Guinness)
An older (90's) movie I've always liked is The Tao of Steve
Also gotta' give mention to True Romance
8 1/2 - My favorite Fellini. Surreal to boot.
The Seventh Seal (Det sjunde inseglet) - Bergman. So outside of the box. A chess game with Death anyone? Ragging on the Catholic Church. My kind of swill.
2001: A Space Odyssey - I like long draw out movies that have the potential to give you a nap or a seizure.
Easy Rider - Jack Nicholson is the man. I have stolen his whiskey twitch.
Faster, Pussycats! Kill! Kill! - Russ Meyer likes big boobs. Holy crap I like big boobs!
Shit I better stop.....
Edit: Rosemary's Baby - Cool trailer.

Not old, but Blood Diamond was on last night. I forgot how much I liked that film.
I always stop flipping channels when the following movies are on:
Fight Club
Heat
Godfather I and II
Armageddon (yes, I know it sucks, but I can't help myself)
I watched a movie last week I thought was kind of cool: "Silent Running" a 1972 sci-fi film starring Bruce Dern. I'm not going to say it was outstanding, but the story was pretty interesting. I'm a little surprised no one has remade it yet.
On the Waterfront - Now there's a great old movie
Ghandi
Amadeus
Ben-Motherfuckin'-Hur
Das Boot
Jaws
Taxi Driver
Mean Streets
The French Connection
Barry Lyndon
La Battaglia di Algeri
The People vs. Larry Flynt - Not so old but really underrated IMO
If you've never seen an elephant ski, you've never been on acid.
- Eddie Izzard
The Hill
Alfie (the original)
To Sir With Love
In The Heat Of The Night
Night of the Hunter
Cape Fear (both versions)
The Hustler
some vintage '70s joints:
Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry
Gumball Rally (easily the best of all the cross-country auto race flicks)
Sleuth (the original with Michael Caine and Sir Lawrence)
Not sure if it is "old" enough (but given the general lists above, it would qualify), but if this is on cable and I am home, I ALWAYS end up watching it:

The sky diving sequence is all time classic.
Some of my favs:
The Lion in Winter - 1968. O'Toole and Hepburn are incredible together. Plus a young Anthony Hopkins and even younger Timothy Dalton.
Fantasia - 1940. Animation meets classical music.
Network - 1976. "I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore!"
All That Jazz - 1979. Roy Scheider channels Bob Fosse. Jessica Lange is the hottest Angel of Death ever.
Prizzi's Honor - 1985. Nicholson and Kathleen Turner as hit men in love, until one is hired to kill the other.
The Conversation - 1974. Hackman as a rightly-paranoid surveillance expert. Watch for a young Harrison Ford.
10 - 1979. A guilty pleasure. Dudley Moore when he was still funny. And Bo Derek when she was smokin' hottttt!
Gleaming The Cube
Das Boot - Awesome German World War II submarine movie. Probably the best submarine movie ever made, and seeing a WWII movie from the German perspective is pretty cool. Note: Don't watch in the overdubbed English forum, watch it in German with the subtitles. You won't notice them.
"Deliverance" Burt Reynolds, Jon Voight and Ned Beatty sooooooiiiii !!
"The Great Train Robbery" Sean Connery and Donald Sutherland
"The Man Who Would Be King" Sean Connery and Michael Caine
"Breaker Morant" Bunch of great British and Aussie character actors
What's Up Doc? (1972) One of the funniest movies ever made. Ryan O'Neil and Barbara Streisand
Going way back for this one. It's one of my favs:
All the way from 1932 - "Freaks"
Twisted and way ahead of it's time. Recently made Rob Zombies list of top ten horror movies.
Bear
Also sure it has been mentioned, but The Great Escape is a, well, "great" movie....
^^^ Own it. As well as "Patton."
War Movies:
"A Bridge Too Far" - Cast is ridiculous (Connery, James Caan, Michael Caine, Redford, Gene Hackman, Anthony Hopkins, Lawrence Olivier, Ryan O'Neal). Own it.
"The Battle of Britain" - See above, and reasonably historically accurate.
"Platoon" - They don't pull any punches.
Most of my other favorites war movies have been said, but "The Big Red One" and "The Dirty Dozen" are pretty good. Cary Grant in "Father Goose" always makes me chuckle. "PT 109" simply because of the content.
"Comedies" (for lack of a better category for a couple of these):
"Fast Times At Ridgemont High" - Probably ties Ferris Bueller's Day Off as my favorite 80s fun flick. Own it.
"Dazed And Confused" - "Love them high school girls, man..." Own it.
"Swingers" - I saw "Made" on the list, but I don't think I saw "Swingers" yet. Own it.
"The Blues Brothers" - The original. So many classic lines and cameos... "It's 106 miles to Chicago... We're on a mission from God..." Own it.
"The Big Lebowski" - 'nuff said. Own it.
"Animal House" - Also self-explanatory. Own it.
Modern Dramas/Thrillers:
"The Aviator" - Scorsese is always good. Leo's gotten better and more interesting as he's gotten older. Cate Blanchett does a pretty good Hepburn. Kate Beckinsale is hot. And Alan Alda is one of my favorites--probably from watching so many M.A.S.H. episodes with my parents. Own it.
"L.A. Confidential" - I think somebody mentioned this. Own it.
"The Usual Suspects" - Don't think it's been mentioned yet, but maybe my favorite movie ending (especially the first time you see it) of any movie I've seen. I dunno, whenever I think of a ridiculous ending, that one comes to mind.
"V For Vendetta" - For some reason I will always watch this if it's on TV.
Westerns:
"The Magnificent Seven"
"High Noon"
"Shane"
Old (and newer) Miscellaneous (because I'm over categories):
"Gone With The Wind" - It's long. Girls like it and my mom always wanted me to watch it. It's fucking good.
"Lost Horizon" - If you like mountains, which you probably do if you hang out here, you'll probably like this. And it's Frank Capra. Iconic.
"Mr. Smith Goes To Washington" - I own this one. Also by Frank Capra. Also iconic. James Stewart at his finest. Makes me proud to be an American.
"Casablanca" - Another "girls movie." It's good.
"Roman Holiday" - See above.
"Bonnie And Clyde" - Just watched this recently. The ending is up there with The Usual Suspects. Faye Dunaway was hot.
"Always" - Pretty decent fire pilot flick with Dreyfuss.
Most of my other favorites have already been said. I'll third that "Chinatown" is fucking awesome... especially if you're into California (or simply Western) water law/politics/history. Faye Dunaway was hot. "The Sting" also has a ridiculous ending. Etc etc etc. Good list. I'll have to Netflix some of the ones mentioned that I haven't seen.
Did I mention Faye Dunaway was hot?![]()
