Beacon rental in SLC: no way in hell?

    east coaster here.

i'm guessing nobody wants to rent out beacons (or can't- liability) in SLC/cottonwood canyons. unless it's through a guide service.

just wondering if there's anywhere that does. highly doubtful. i know the routine- no, i haven't used a beacon. yes, they are useless unless you know how to use them and use them well (with practice).

my buddy and i are heading out, skiing with folks out there and want to be safe- and potentially head out of bounds with local folks. it would be sweet to rent for a week- and practice the first couple days at night with 'em before we headed out. would also be nice just to have one in-bounds for peace of mind with all the talk of avi's that have gone off in bounds this year.

i have experience in hazardous terrain, snow travel, and taught basic avi stuff by a certified AAA guy. just no beacon experience. i'm not a clueless idiot about to head off into the wasatch backcountry- far from doing that.

i'm asking to get shit on by one or more of you with this question.

no shit - Wastach Touring is the only place I know of that might have it, but I don't see it on their rental list

    go buy one

I know Black Diamond rents AT gear - you'd think they would rent the safety equipment to go with it, but I don't know for sure.

Sounds to me like this won't be your first and last ski trip out west for you. And once you ski in the backcountry you'll be hooked on it

So.... Why not just go ahead and drop the coin on buying the full set-up (Transceiver, shovel and probe pole)? You know you'll use it again. And by owning your own transcivers you can get out there a practice with them, etc....

    Cheers,

buying my own stuff? yeah, when i'm outta college in 3 months for good. we do some BC in Vermont/new hampshire (don't need beacons in *most* places)

i called wasatch touring and Black diamond stores.

first off- $30/day for verdicts/zealots with freeride+'s (sweeet) from BD's store.
also, the big yard sale is going down on the 22nd of March (my last day in town) so we might check it out if we're beat after 5 days of skiing (anyone else going?). be there or else....

U of U: yep. got GREAT prices for non-members. a credit card deposit gets you
    Tracker Beacon
    probe
    shovel
    3 days: $28.

also do BD skis (80mm waist), freerides, garmont boots, telescoping poles and ascension skins. price?
    $40/weekend/3 days for non-members/

    amazing prices for rentals.

    thanks everyone!
PS: anyone wanna make some BC turns when we're out there in mid march? may have to go in on some of this stuff. we're skiing LLC- alta mostly.

Early fall shows great deals, kirkum and the country boy store.

as crystal! You stole Fizzy Lifting Drinks. You bumped
into the ceiling which now has to be washed and sterilized,
so you get nothing! You lose! Good day, sir!

yes, they still have beacons and touring gear available this year. If your a student you get a much better price also. This is great for someone who cant justify buying a beacon for only using it a couple times per season.
