    Ride the fence much?

No one likes to pay taxes but only right wing anti-tax zealots (see Grover Norquist) truly believe that wealth is created in a vacuum. The bottom line is a progressive tax structure helps secure the broad middle class necessary to promote a robust economy. Concentrate too much of your wealth in the hands of too few and you become stagnant and inefficient. Over two thirds of all economic activity in the US is generated from consumer spending, so do you think cutting taxes on the rich and raising taxes on the working poor/lower middle class aka a “flat tax” will be able to sustain that reality? Sorry but we here in the US already tried the oligarchy/Robber Baron era thing and all we got to show for it was this lousy t-shirt…and the great depression!

Be a man, and support yourself and your family, and quit asking the government or someone else to do what you should be doing.

I'm pretty much ALL ABOUT being independent. I can take care of myself, can you?

I was in the Phoenix area for work this week and couldn't believe the number of newish, full-sized pickups in the parking lot. Why the hell do all these people need these to commute to work?

That’s just a bunch of glib horseshit which complexity ignores the realties of a large and complex system that is required to govern hundreds of millions of people.

Who the hell doesn’t love the “concept” of a simplistic no bones libertarian government aside from the fact it doesn’t work when it’s put to scale. It works fine for your typical HOA but try applying that to an enormous nation like the US and you end up with fucking Thunderdome. It’s a siren song for the simple minded.

Open your eyes Brett if you live in the US or any industrialized nation there is nothing that can be labeled independent. Schools roads defense criminal justice etc etc all play a pivotal roll in EVYTHING you call your own. The job you have the security you enjoy the technology around you is all subsidized supported directly or indirectly by taxes the government and your fellow citizens. It’s a romantic notion to think of yourself as this lone wolf responsible only for himself or those he loves but it’s an illusion you are completely fuking naked without your government.

That's why I like the system we have in place in this country.
However, if I wanted to live like Claude Dallas and the government didn't fuck with me for doing so, I'm pretty sure I'd do fine when most would not.

You aren’t grasping the concept of what government is and what it provides. You can’t detach yourself from it even if you try drop out society and go all white separatist militia style that’s just being antagonistic. I hate to cut this short but I’ve got a class to teach on the history of Marxism and I seem to have misplaced my Harris Tweed jacket and pipe.

Government has one basic fundamental purpose.

Providing basic security from our neighbors, and along with that, order among the people the government resides over.

If it wasn't for this basic principal/problem, we could all live like mountain men, being fully self-supportive.

Government has become a very complicated thing, but one thing is for sure, I'm about less government, not more. (which you advocate through socialized health care)

advocating for private(ish) healthcare leads to more govt. involvement in your life rather that less. But it isn't a superficially attractive line of reasoning and so it goes unexamined by those who claim to favor private(ish) healthcare. Oh well.

Fascinating how a thread on V-8's turns into a gov't rant about taxation and socialism. We should be talking about torque and hp, and Ford vs. Chevy vs. Toyota\Nissan.

You can't propose that people drive fuel efficient vehicles or even speak of conservation without attracting the attention of the neocon sophists who invariable try to link such talk with socialism or any one of an endless variation of arguments that are always completely unrelated to the topic at hand.

I like small block Chevy’s, preferably stroked like this 383. It's naturally aspirated and making 500 HP with a single carb. Perfection!

Absolutely agree...it's all about personal responsibility.

So far in this thread, everyone has blamed all these problems on someone else. It's the governments fault, it's exxon's fault, it's the teachers fault..well maybe not the last one.

We have become a society of pansies...really we have. It's always blame someone else.

If you bought that gas guzzler and now are whining about gas prices...it's your fault

If you bought a home that you couldn't afford...it's your fault

If you get laid off it's your responsibility to get another job

It was stated that we have been "tricked" by the "auto industry" to buy big gas guzzling cars and trucks. Yea that's right they pulled the wool over our eyes and shook us till our pockets were empty. If you really want to change things do it YOURSELF. Buy a small compact. Go biodiesel. Go electric. There are other options...yet those are always forgotten. The worst position though is held by those hypocrits that complain about all these things and yet drive cars that get shit gas mileage.

This is basic market practices here. The auto manufacturers are going to provide cars and trucks that are in demand.

Don't think they nationalized it. As its offshore its the gov't anyway. They did require that a certain % of project was done by the Gov't oil company.

There is a lot of focus on Norway's fund here in Alberta as to we should structure yours the same way.

Just for info your top 5 suppliers

CANADA 1,919 barrels per day imports to USA
    SAUDI ARABIA 1,530
    MEXICO 1,484
    VENEZUELA 1,227
    NIGERIA 1,215

Norway's the only functioning state that receives the majority of its revenue from oil exports. So I guess that'd be the one to focus on. Alaska's...not so much.
