I have a serious case of Sinusitis

Seriously, the MOHSHSIHd thread is just a coincidence. I woke up last night and it felt like my head was going to explode. I wanted to rip out my upper molars with a plier and then shoot myself. Thanks to Web/MD and a high school biology class, I feel fairly confident in my self-diagnosis. Question:

Do I need to go to an M.D. and get some antibiotics?

Am already taking pseudophederin, which has relieved the pressure/pain and made me a bit loopy...

Try Mucinex or Humibid first, and recently there was a thread about this, there's some sort of like mini-teapot dealio where you pour salt water in one nostril and it comes out the other after going through your sinuses, damn if I can remember what it's called though.

I think there's differing schools of opinion regarding antibiotics for sinusitis, some doctors do, some don't. I'd say yes, my jew of a doctor is stingy with the antibios. But keep on the psuedo, take some aspirin every 4 hours and see if you can hold up.

Second on Tippsters rec. Irrigate twice a day for 2 weeks. All pharmacies now carry some sort of irrigation system. Also take Mucinex. Your infection should clear up. If it doesn't clear in a week go get some meds.

It's called a neti pot. My girlfriend has one. It's like a douche for your nose, but it works.

Home made recipe for sinusitis. Take some non-iodized kosher salt or sea salt. Place a tsp of it into a 16 oz container, a 1/2 tsp of baking soda & a 1/2 tsp of hydrogen peroxide. Mix with filtered water at room temp. Poor into a neti pot and rinse the nasal cavities, or use a rubber syringe at a drug store will work too. Once in the morning and once in the evening (at the very least). Anti biotics don't do much good for the sinuses.

Also, give this trick a try before bed. Take vicks vapor rub and rub it on the soles of your feet. Put a pair of socks to cover and then hit the sack. It really does work.

Ok that sounds a bit wack, any theories on why it works?

No idea, and yes it sounds wack but after suffering from congestion and severe coughing a few months back, I was desperate so I gave it a try. I'll be damned if it didn't work. Before that I had tried the usual Nyquil and cough drops that would work for a few hours then I'd find myself waking up at 2 AM in a coughing fit.

I put about a thimble size amount of Vicks on each foot and rub it in for a few minutes. Put an old pair of socks on the feet. Next thing I know I'm waking up 8 hours later feeling much better.

    Religiousist? Well, biggot I suppose.

ice, I hear way more shit like that here than I ever did in the "dirty south"...or thereabouts.

Oh, and I'm sold on the Neti Pot. It's also great for sore throats and runny nose. I do it in the morning and it clears me out so much I can taste the fluoride in my toothpaste (yeah, not really, but the toothpaste is especially minty). I'm not a fan of the SinuCleanse that Tipp linked to, though. It's an ugly plastic piece of shit, and the spout is too big for average-sized nostrils. Unfortunately, I'm too cheap to replace it.

IMO the best system for irrigating is a WaterPik with a special nasal attachment. I use it every day. I'm looking into a gas powered 2 stroke WaterPik for a little more horsepower when the sinus gets real bad.

After gtting a nasty sinus infection years ago, I couldn't go to altitude (ie up the mountain or in a plane) without horrible sinus pains, felt like my face was in a vise. The non drowsy sinus meds with ephedrine always made me wired so I started taking a natural anti-histamine called 'quercetin' as a preventative measure and began bringing a few pills in case my sinuses acted up anyways. That stuff works great and is cheap.

I concur with the neti pot therapy. I use the sinuclense dealio. Cheap plastic piece of crap, but it wont shatter when you knock it off the sink.
    In with the 9.
