I've had ongoing ankle issues since badly spraining my ankle in summer 2006 playing soccer. My problems have been diagnosed as "sinus tarsi syndrome" and lateral sural nerve impingement. What specifically is causing this lateral pain and hindfoot instability is not 100% certain, but it is certain that I have damage or impingemnt on the nerve. I did have an MRI that found a small divot in my calcaneus and an adjacent subchondral cyst that has formed, and noted fluid in my sinus tarsi area. One of these (or a combination, along with scar tissue) could be causing the syndrome.

My foot doctor suggested speaking with a surgeon that does subtalar arthroscopy to take a look in the joint, potentially clean up the cyst and divot, and take a look at how the nerve is being impinged (i.e., by scar tissue, etc.)

Is anyone familiar with subtalar arthroscopy or has had it done on their ankle?
