Yes. Under the American system size is relative to the maximum size of the slide path. So a R5 is "Major or maximum, relative to avalanche path.

Under the Canadian system a size/class 5 is = "Largest snow avalanche known. Could destroy a village or a forest of 40 hectares (approx 100 acres).
