    Mandatory Helmets in MI

State Rep. Bob Constan is sponsoring a bill that would require helmets while skiing at resorts following a fatal accident in December at Schuss Mountain. His bill would have a $100 fine for anyone caught skiing without a helmet, but it wouldn't be strictly enforced, because he wouldn't want to see an experienced skiier with a $100 fine. The story did not mention how he plans to enforce this law if it were passed.

I wear a helmet most of the time for my personal reasons. Ski helmets are tested for low speed colliions, and don't protect your neck and spine. Maybe they just need to make us all wear MX style full face helmets, chest & back protectors, neck supports, and shin guards while they're at it. Then we'll safe out there.

EDIT: Here's a link to the introduced bill.

The best way to keep skiers safe is to prevent us from skiing. We should make skiing illegal and eliminate all skiing accidents.

I'm from the government and I'm here to help.

Unbelievable. I wear a helmet, as I believe virtually all here do. And I believe most here would recommend them to anyone, but to legislate personally responsibilty is facism. I can't believe we still call ourselves the free-est nation in the world when we have millions upon millions of laws on the books telling us what we can and can't do and as a result have more of our population in prison then any where else in the world (including billion-man COMMUNIST China). Idealist do-good politicians are the problem not the solution. Listen up all you young Harvard-bound philosophy-reading JFK-wannabe idealist do-gooders who want to save the world and turn it into a perfect utopia where no one gets hurt and everyone is happy and warm and fuzzy. Do the world a favor and shoot yourself in the fucking head before you unleash your good deeds upon us.

Not enforcible means that if your child dies and isn't wearing a helmet, we'll prosecute you. As a Michigan resident, this is an attack on our tourism. I ride a Harley and many other riders won't travel here because of our helmet law.

NH doesn't even require seatbelts or motorcycle helmets. Just move there, its cooler than Michigan anyway. I love that I was born in such a rebel rouser state. F- government enforcement of personal choices. Oh, and there's no taxes.

Problem is you have to live in NH...
Nah, I'm just F-ing with ya. I live in WI for heavens sakes.

Back to the point though. I wear a helmet during rail sessions and tree runs, and that means I usually wear a helmet. But I like the option of not wearing one, cause sometimes you're just in that balls-to-the-wall fuck safety kinda mood. If I screw my head up, it should be my own worry, not the state's.
"She loved snow...That was the simple objective, being airborne, up longer, higher, more casually and with more fuckoff elegance than anyone else...Such endeavours require a kind of egotism, a near autistic narrowness. Everything conspires against you, the habits of physics, the impulse to flee and you're weighted down by every dollop of commonsense ever dished up. Everyone will tell you your goal is impossible, pointless, stupid, wasteful. This idiot resolve is all you have."

There's no taxes in Cali either.... but don't tell them that (or the IRS for that matter) for me, thanks.

Nice, you're going to be like this guy from NH who didn't pay taxes to the feds all his life (there's still fed taxes in NH).

He barricaded himself inside and had a stand off with the swat teams complete with food drops and stuff. I love that he boxed himself in with a rusted out Kubota tractor. Sorry for the minor hijack, I live in VT now and just miss not dealing with shit in NH

Anyone ever heard of natural selection? If an adult wants to put on his jeans, take the garage-sale 205's out of the garage, and then start sliding through the trees of a 300 vertical foot iceball in Michigan, I have no problem with that.

I'm failing to see how the state can enforce this, as most of the resorts in Michigan are on privately held land. I don't think that a Private Resort is going to let the local PD come in and start ticketing their customer base for helmet usage or lack there of.

It's just plain old bad for bizzness.
Since then it's been a book you read in reverse, so you understand less as the pages turn.

Meh. I usually don't like YSE but he is right on here. When are they going to legislate body armor? Someone will try to legislate fat people to stop drinking cokes too.

They already do. NYC bans trans fat and either MO or MS or AR is trying to ban restaurants from serving fat people (it was up on Drudge the other day).

As a matter of fact, they might try that:
JACKSON, Miss. - A state lawmaker has proposed a ban on restaurant service to obese customers.

The guy you just described is exactly why I wear a helmet here.

Are YOU really that stupid? Right from the dictionary...

"Fascism is an authoritarian political ideology (generally tied to a mass movement) that considers the individual subordinate to the interests of the state, party or society as a whole."

The government telling you that you must wear a helmet is an individual being subordinate to the interest of the state. But lets not bother ourselves with things like definitions and facts.

I know. If I want to go out and shoot someone I should be able to. If I want to park in front of a fire hydrant I should be able to.

here in whistler you need a helmet to get into the xl park.. i don't see anything wrong with forcing children to wear helmets in fact i think all resorts should, as an adult though i like to make my own decisions. and who complained about trans fat bans? thats like complaining that the government has banned restaurants from putting benzene in your food. they did you a favour buddy.

New bill would make it illegal for restaurants to serve the obese.
