how bout Grant Green, Charlie Hunter and Vernon Reid
Mark Ribot.
And second Bill Frisell. That guy's guitar sounds like it's made of liquid.
And how can anyone say Steve Vai is "underrated"? The guy was practically synonymous with guitar wanking for a decade. Hell, he was Zappa's "stunt guitarist."
Can't say this guy is one of my favorites, but I do think he has a hell of a lot of talent in the guitar department...Prince.
"If it had taken any effort I wouldn't have done it at all. I mean it. I wouldn't have done anything" - B. Kelso
These guys get a lot of credit, but only in the jazz world, which typically means they don't get enough widespread credit:
Wes Montgomery
John Scofield
Al Dimeola
Joe Pass
Pat Metheny
Larry Carlton
Ronny Jordan
Phil Upchurch
Charlie Hunter
Blues:
Albert Collins
Also, from the soul patrol:
Ernie Isley (Isley Bros.)
Stanley Jordan

Hmm, some of you missed the point of the thread... Steve Vai
Mark Knopfler
Ry Cooder
Zappa
Jeff Beck
Al di Meola
Wes Montgommery
...
Django. (Because he can't get enough credit)
Hank Marvin
Mike Oldfield
"Typically euro, french in particular, in my opinion. It's the same skiing or climbing there. They are completely unfazed by their own assholeness. Like it's normal." - srsosbso
david hidalgo
Tony Furtado can lay down some good ol Blue Grass
Larry Coryell
John McLaughlin
these two fusion pioneers are truely unreal. anything from 69-73ish era is mind blowing. pretty much where acid jazz came from.
and of course; Buckethead
Dave Mathews
Tim Reynolds
John Mayer..hated him til I saw him play Austin City Limits...insanity...
Robert Smith (the Cure)
Billy Corgan (The Smashing Pumpkins, Zwan: Listen to Jesus I/Mary star of the Sea...his solo is crazy...plus Jimmy's unhuman drumming...)
Ben Harper
Mike McCready (Pearl Jam)
Brian David Blush (the Refreshments)
Bob Mould
Francis Black
Bob Balch (Fu Manchu)
Ray Toro (My Chemical Romance, the guy is Brian May incarnate)
Jesse Lacey & Vincent Accardi (from Brand New - they create sonic scapes and punk fury)
Elliot Smith
Nick Drake
Lindsey Buckingham
Mark Knopfler
This could go on forever...

Forgot a couple, since we said "Underated" but still damn talented and contributed a lot to the course of music.
Peter Frampton
Glen Campbell

I'll agree that both are underrated and even that both, particularly Frampton, were pretty damn good.
Still, get real. I think we're trying to aim a little higher here, despite the knucklehead nominations of Dimebag et. al.
If not, hey, my bad.
Joe Walsh
Blueses stuff; Duke Robillard, Joe Bonamassa, Nick Moss, Bob Margolin, Sony Landreth, Jimmy Thackery, Robben Ford, Ronnie Earl, Chris Duarte and for our country folks; Vince Gill and Steve Trovato. If you like chicken picken, I definatly would check out Steve Trovato's Country Jazzmaster. Good Stuff.
So by this time, she was ...
Jerry Cantrell
Charlie, here comes the deuce. And when you speak of me, speak well.
Bill Kirchen plays a mean tele.
You know him even if you don't know it, think Commander Cody and "Hot Rod Lincoln". He's done a lot more than that though.
Bob Mould
Josh Zee (Protein, Mother Truckers)
Eddie Hazel (Parliament/Funkadelic)
Thurston Moore
Curt Kirkwood (Meat Puppets)
John Frusciante
Bryan Kehoe (The Kehoe Nation, M.I.R.V., Frog Brigade)

Did not read back through to see if he was mentioned, but I was really impressed with David Lindley when I saw him. I also vote for Jorma, but everyone knows he kicks it, so not so much for not getting enough credit.
