    Running to Ski (NSFW)

While running the dog tonight, I got thinking about the relationship between running and skiing. My slow twitch muscles prefer long distances and a steady pace. Some of my thoughts:
    +
-aerobic endurance, good for going all day strong and hiking
-increased lung capacity, altitude adjustment, clearer mind
-calories burned, lookin sexy while naked
    -leg strengthening, muscle building
    -good post-run stretch session

    -
    -impact on knees
    -not focused on skiing muscles/movements
-denver gang wars and stray bullets
-moving too fast to talk to cutie walking her bulldog

How do the TGR personal trainers feel about running mid-season? Too tolling on the knees? Any other runners out there?

and because who doesn't like a naked girl in snow

I figured that picture would get some attention, butttttt...
Q: Any maggots run to stay in shape during ski season?

I think maybe I am subconsciously trying to justify being lazy and staying home on the couch when I can't ski. Motivate me, Q: is running good training for skiing?

I continue running in the winter, but limit my mileage. I also switch things up, do a lot of indoor climbing, core work, hit the arms and chest, etc. I'd say climbing though would be my main "exercise". Pretty low impact, unless you deck out, and helps with balance, and is a major core workout.

Mrs. Montanaskier is an AVID CRAZY runner. She runs all year outside no matter the temps or conditions. While training for the Boston Marathon last year she did an 18 mile training run in West Yellowstone while the temps were -24! She also skis alot, if you like to run, keep running.

Mr. Montanaskier does not run at all. He does not run in the winter or the summer or spring or fall.

In previous years, getting ~25 days in skiing, I kept up my running at my normal spring/summer/fall rate of 6 days a week as long as I wasn't skiing. Coming from low elevation to a higher one, I felt it definitely helped me keep up with people to have good aerobic capacity. This year, living at a higher elevation and skiing just about every day, I've adjusted down to 4 days a week. Again, I think it helps with the aerobic aspects of hiking to the goods and whatnot, but the effects are mitigated by the every day skiing. I don't notice any problems with it other than a slight decrease of energy while skiing due to running the day before. Since I'm usually a bit over-energized it probably helps.

I'm doing about 20mpw right now, taking both weekend days off to ski. I think it helps with general fitness and maybe aerobic capacity. But the muscle groups running works are very different than those used in skiing and especially touring, which is all quad and hip flexor.

I have a bum rt knee, a bum left hip, and now some sort of lower back problem. So I don't run much, except in the winter. I don't like the distance thing. Good for building some endurance, bad for my knee but not really applicable to skiing. I like to run on the track or football field. During the winter the fields are empty, so I can bring my dog as my training partner. Wind sprints and good old fashion 400 meter runners workout helps build up the fast twitch muscles and give you some lung capacity. Do some situps while you're on the couch. Multitasking is so hot right now.

I often find that running is a good way to 'reset' after skiing. I'm usually pretty sore and tight after a day of skiing, but if I go out for an easy 5 miles or so after skiing (after the food binge on the ride home..), and stretch after running, I sleep much better, and feel much better the next day. Running is a completely different movement than skiing- uses a different energy system, much like swimming vs. biking vs. running in a triathlon, so running after skiing is surprisingly easy, regardless of how tired you might think you are.

plus, clearly you're feeling some sort of guilt for not running...why not spend the 30mins running instead of surfing/posting...

    just my two cents

and remember, "if the furnace is hot enough, anything will burn.."

    cheers,
    Devin
