    Black Mountain of NH, 1/20/2008

    Date(s) Skied: January 20th, 2008

Resort or Ski Area: Black Mountain Ski Area of NH.

    Conditions: Packed Powder

Liftlines: No liftlines. At most, you would have a couplke of people in front of you, but most of the time you could just ski right onto the chair.

Crowds: No crowds on the trails. They were pretty empty.

Trip Report: Black Mountain truly is a place with Classic New England Style trails. The only two "really wide" trails are Jackson Standard and Maple Slalom. Both of which are the two main trails one can see from the road. Next, I would like to say it seems like Black is putting in a much better effort this year than previous years. They had really good coverage, and they were making more snow than I have ever seen them make. If anyone has seen the Men at Black advertisement (haha), they are out working hard this time around. They were making snow on Jackson Standard, Maple Slalom, not just a little, but a lot. With more piles of snow stockpiled in certain areas. Lostbo was open. White Knuckle was open, much to my surprise. All the greens were open. All blues were open with the exception of the top portion of Bob-O-Link. Most of the Blacks were open. With a little more snow, I would say that everything could be open. If you haven't been here yet this season, be sure to go, becasue Black is a fun mountain!

Now on to everyone's favorite part of the post, the pictures... 8)

    Untracked snow awaits... yet again!:

A lot of time must have went into making these lift towers, each piece bolted together:

    Upper Galloping Goose:

White Knuckle, steeper than it looks:

    More White Knuckle:

I like the way that this photo came out, approaching the half-way stop on the Summit Double:

We just moved down the road from Black. Went there one day to take my husbands kids for a ski lesson. It wasn't a day for going "big", just fun for the kids. Thought it would be great since it was a small family oriented place and just down the road.

Cute hill, but so disappointed in the way they run the ops. I realize it is a mom and pop shot, but come on.....get your shit together.

Suiting the kids up at ski rental was a cluster, even though we were the only ones there. Ski school instuctors were late and they ended up being instructed by a 10 year old "helper". Since it took so long to get the kids through rental and into ski school, we decided to ski half a day. Changed our passes from full day to half and it took forever for them to figure out a refund on the debit card (refund never hit the bank account, so actually got charged twice and wasn't worth going back and fighting it, especially since I didn't keep the receipt).

Don't even get me started on the bar. Let me just say, don't order anything on the menu, since they will have no clue how to make it.

The only thing that redeemed the day was the skiing we did with the kids at the end of the day. So cool to see them enjoy the sport and just want more!

Sorry to hear about your experience. In some aspects, yes Black does have to get their shit together.

Never had a lesson there, don't plan on it. But if I were you, I would write a letter talking about what happened.

But as for the food, never have I been to a mountain that has better burgers... ever.

Maybe give it another shot later this month of something?

Just venting. I do realize they are having labor issues and I have yet to try the burgers.

One bad experience will not keep me away, but my pass to a different mountain probably will.
