    Mittersill, NH help

Yes I did a search first.......

New to skinning/touring so I want to start getting my legs under me by checking out Mittersill tomorrow. Can anyone tell me where the place to park, start skinning, trail to skin up , etc. Anyone been there recently? Anyone heading there tomorrow? Thanks.

Skinning up Mittersill seems silly, although i have seen it done.

Park at the bottom. Skin up. Not that hard.

Mostly, it is just lapped repeatedly from a Cannon lift ticket.

If you are going to skin, why not go someplace without moguls?

    Kill all the telemarkers
But they’ll put us in jail if we kill all the telemarkers
    Telemarketers! Kill the telemarketers!
Oh we can do that. We don’t even need a reason

If skinning is your mission, you could skin up the Sherburne trail from Pinkham to Hojo's, maybe up into Tucks, and ski out the same way. Obviously watch out for avalanche conditions above Hojo's, but this is a decent skin for a first timer.

Also, Wildcat dawn patrol is fun and fully supported by the management.

Sherburne does sound good, but I have been up to hojos a zillion times and I like the idea of being able to make a couple of different runs if I go to Mittersill and it's someplace new. Cannon's website says they got 4-5" of new snow so hopefully there will be ok coverage.

Mittersill is fun, but is generally best lapped with a Cannon pass.

One thing to try though: there is an old CCC ski trail off skiers left of Mittersill. It drops off to skier's left just below the top of the hike over to Mittersill from Cannon (well above the top of the old abandoned lift you come normally). It drops into a different drainage and you eventually wind up in a cross country ski area about 7 miles by road from Cannon. If you're going to skin anyway, you might want to try this rather than going to Mittersill proper. I'm sure you can find it from the bottom by asking at the cross country area. There's also a book on backcountry skiing in NH and Maine that describes it in detail.

I don't plan on buying a ticket to cannon tomorrow, just skinning from the bottom. I also just want to keep it simple as it will be my first real time skinning so that's why I thought mittersill would be a good place.
