be nervous about your ski tech, not the binding. if that hole spins and is not repaired, its a huge weak spot beacuse alot of skis are re-inforced where the binding screws in, and less so underfoot. if you could look, alot/most skis have extra fiberglass in 2 patched where traditional bindings screw in, and the "standard" layup underfoot.

if this screw spins it NEEDS to be helicoiled and not just have a shoulder shrug. my guess is alot of ski techs don't care because they don't think there is alot of force there to pull that screw out.

this was in essence also what i posted in the nuked thread shortly before it got nuked.

either the ski failed (more than likey due to a bad mount and MAYBE a bad ski), the screw failed and sheared off (ie markers fault), or the mount sucked and was the techs fault. my guess is that the screws are NOT shearing off. that is very unlikely.

OK, OK. This has been eating at me like a cancer. I have to come clean. I've been purging the forum of ALL anti-Marker bias for years. There's no way I could have retired at age 33 without all the Marker kickback money. Don't blame TGR. It was me.

    I'm so sorry.

    just to elaborate

assuming the screw has a minimum diameter of about .1875" aka 3/16" and is of reasonably high grade steel, single shear failure would occur somewhere around 1500lbf if im remembering correctly.

    so yea, very unlikely.
at that force your definitely just rip it out of the ski first.

sorry if this is a jong-y question, but how can I check this on my skis? just use a screwdriver and see if the screw is tight?

also, I've been hearing a fair amount of creaking from my bindings when standing around, in lift lines etc. Everything feels solid. Any idea what's making noise? Anyone else hearing creaking?

I hope that Duke owners will continue to post (and leave up) their issues with the binding. There's no justification however for the Marker-bashing on this product. AT bindings are complex engineering and probably impossible to test properly without actual distribution. The current Dynafits and Freerides are the product of many years of refinement. Naxos and Silverettas are still stuck on the learning curve. The Duke is probably 2 or 3 years away. But I for one am happy to wait, and I am glad that a major manufacturer is prepared to use its resourses to develop a new backcountry product.

I always recommend dynafits or freerides.

don't turn it hard cause you'll break the bond of the glue and prolly cause more damage than good. it should be tightened to 4nm of force, which is basically just tight. so maybe jsut try to turn it. if there is any resistance at all you are probably fine. if it spins freely, its spun.

pr jsut ski them and see what happens. there is either a 3 or 5 year (cannot remember) warrenty on them, so not a huge deal.

This is why i decided to forgo a prodeal and buy my Dukes at REI. Return Every Item, the foolproof warranty. Will they pay for my hospital bills if I eject into the trees, probably not. But they'll a) replace my bindings and b) replace my skis if the bindings pull out and damage the skis. Gratis. To me, thats worth the extra $100 any day of the week. I don't know if I'd trust REI to mount them correctly ( I didn't), but thats another story altogether.

And as for the Dukes...15 days and counting. Lots of hucks. Lots of pow. Couple days of touring. Several ugly wipe-outs pulling 270's. And they're still about 400 times better (solid!) than my old Freeride +'s, so I'm a happy camper.

And no creaking, hardboiled. I'd get that shit checked out.

I find the solution to be very simple. Get Marshal to mount 'em. That is what I did and I feel confident that I won't break them unless something really gnarly happens. But I am 5'10" 155lbs, so I usually don't break much without help from rocks and trees.

    just my $.02

And props to marshal for instilling confidence in those of us that took our sh!t to him for a proper mount.

So THATS why no one says anything bad about marker here.
