Gunder inspired me.
Saturday was my last day at the coffee shop I've been working for the past two years. For the past four I've also had very infrequent freelance work as a writer.
I guess I'm not officially employed. My new position is still contractual. No benefits, but I'll make twice what I made at the coffee shop, working from home or wherever I have wireless on my own hours. I'll get to travel a bunch and go skiing this winter. Hopefully I'll make a bunch of new contacts and will be able to keep doing similar things in the future if the current one falls through. It's a bit of a risk, but passing just to keep working a dead end job was not an option. This week marks the first time in since I graduated college I'm not working service industry or customer service (not counting an internship and some stints of unemployment/Tony Hawk Pro Skater mastering).
To be fair, I loved working at the coffee shop and I'm gonna really miss it. I'll probably cover shifts there now and then. I'm good friends now with the two owners and most of my co-workers there. The owners were great, just poor. If they could've afforded it, they would've given me benefits, paid vacation, etc. I don't blame them for a thing, and at the same time they were fully understanding of my leaving.
Well, anyway. I'm 28 and while I'm making what most of you would consider a tiny income, it's way more than what I'm used to and my position is what i actually want to be doing with my life. I might actually be able to open a savings account, something I haven't had since high school.
