Fucked up again on Saturday. FUCK!!! I was feeling pretty good. I took a little tumble in the bumps, landed flat and HARD. I thought it would be minor, but by Saturday night, I could barely walk again. I had to turn down a free lift ticket on Sunday.

Vicodin & a good pale ale. I'm a little better today. But not much.

I was helping my neighbor move a basket of food last Friday and hurt my back hours before boarding a flight to see my girlfriend. Total waste of a weekend; couldn't do anything. Nothing. That's how bad it is when you're afraid to blow your load cuz the back spasm would probably force me to kick her in the head with an errant knee jerk.

A number of years ago I had a herniated disk. What set it off was something that I thought was pretty innocuous: Popped a binding on a steep chute (didn't fall, just pre-release) then had to ski down on the one ski to where the popped one ended up a couple hundred feet down. Back felt pretty bad on the lift ride back up, so I skied a groomer to the base. By the time I got there I was in such bad shape I could hardly get back to my car.

Don't know exactly why this triggered a problem, but at the time I did a lot of bump skiing and had paddled whitewater C1 for years (which is really brutal on the back/shoulders) so I was probably overdue.

I was almost completely incapacitated for about 5 weeks after the first occurrence. Did rehab/cortisone-epidural/chiro and it finally started getting better, but over the next two years I had a couple of relapses when I wasn't careful. Ended up moving from C1 to kayak, cut way down on the bump skiing and refused to help anyone move their furniture.

Eight years later now and haven't had any problems in a couple of years. Never went for surgery, although some of the docs were selling it pretty hard. This was primarily due to the recommendation of a relative who is in sports medicine. "Avoid if you can. You'll never be the same."

Some of the ability/luck in recovering from this may be due to the fact that my core strength is bomber (many years of paddling). Best rehab I found (once I was able to actually walk/move with some facility) was swimming and flat water paddling. Both are low impact, require a decent range of motion and work your core muscles.

    Good luck!
