Schwert, I just got back to where I am staying from the show.
It was...pretty out of this world, in terms of technical mastery.
I have a new view of Stanley Clarke...holy shit, his acoustic bass solo was truly mind-wrenching. (Think flamenco dexterity on an upright bass...silly good)
I think sometimes they are too good for their own good...every song became a vehicle for loong, extended, (mildly) didactic, occasionally polytonal solos. I liked it best when they slowed down and riffed on a rhythm for more than one or two odd time changes best. Good lord, though, those guys are true musical animals. I think they need a few more shows to get dialed, but that music is hard to get down, I'm sure.
I have to admit, if I could play at that level, it would be difficult NOT to, but sometimes silence is the perfect note. These guys wrote/performed this music as young, 'better than the rest' Jazzmen, and I think they found it hard not to show those chops in every composition. (I digress)
Overall, a great show.
(There were no less than 5 standing ovations, FWIW)
Apparently Governor Huntsman is the 'Hippest Governor in the country', according to Lenny White.

^^^ excellent record!
Sounds like I missed one helluva show Rideit!
Won tickets this past week on the radio for the show here on the 14th, pretty psyched to go see them. Haven't got the confirmation yet so I'm not sure how good the seats are.

Holy shit. Took them a short while to get warmed up, but that was an amazing show. They played Spain during the encore as well; really cool to see them just call a tune and figure it out on the fly.
Oh and apparently they might be releasing a DVD from this tour.
for those who dig the RTF and fuxion ilk, check out this site:

Soooo... Yeah they were great.
It was good lots of different styles mixing together, could have done a little less with Chick's synthesizer but really liked him when he would play piano or the organ.
Was pretty much blown away with Stanley Clarke's stand up bass the guy just wrecked it, he played a lot of different sounds and styles and beautifully each and every.
Al Di Meola stilll has stuningly fast hands played some amazing chords and was just clean, very precise, his acoustic stuff was very good, he has a huge range of sound.
Can't recommend it enough, if you like music there is something there for you.

Chick is one of my biggest musical inspirations and I cannot wait to finally get the chance to see him live with Return to Forever. I even bought the VIP ticket package off of their website www.return2forever.com. Everyone says that they sound amazing. I can't wait to see them when they get back from Europe. I'll let you know how it goes.
Friday night at the Montreux Jazz festival.
Amazing.
