We had a good day...others did not.

As some of you read in the Sabbath Skiing thread, we had an epic day enjoying the mountains, sunshine. comoradery, and skiing. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case 5000' below us.

I just learned that a person in the circle of friends has gone to scope lines on the other side for us. Kent, a tall, lanky man with much artistic ability, was put to sleep last night by firneds after a night of partying it up. Kent did not wake up this morning due to alcohol overdose...alcohol poisoning.

From what I am told, it was just another night of Tom Foolery and nobody thought that anyone of them were that intoxicated.

I'll find out more as the phone calls begin to circulate.

I know a lot of you drink and drink a lot. And an occurance like this is rare, but be reminded of what the circumstances are...especially since the upcoming 'liver killer' party is just around the corner.

    peace

sincere condolences to your circle of friends, what a terrible way to lose someone, when you thought it was all in good times and a celebration of living.

aw, man, what a sobering experience, literally.

    ********************

a story like that makes me reflect a bit harder on one such New Year's Eve (ski weekend) spent in NH with 2 of my best girlfriends a few years back. we drank so goddamn much that night in the bars, free drinks coming left and right.....
the 'responsible' one of us, sobered up quickly while taking care of my sick ass later that evening, so maybe that actually helped her, because the next day when we got ready to head home, she was physically numb all over, and completely out of it, and she said she felt it was like being ridiculously stoned. (the drive home on the kangamangus at 20mph was the result of massive paranoia and my lingering stomach upset)

her 'hangover' lasted for 9 or 10 days, for the first 5 or so, she could not drive due to the numbness and non-existent reaction time.

Turns out, she's 'allergic' to alcohol, doesn't have the protein in her liver to break it down properly, essentially creating fromaldahyde/amalgamyde (one of those two); so it poisoned her, literally, but obviously, we were lucky the outcome was not much worse. we had some warning signs of similar post-effects of alcohol with her on previous occaisons, but she chose to brush it off, or never really linked the numbness with alcohol before - so let that be a lesson - listen to your body & better sense once in a while!

we joke about it now, about her 'almost pickeling herself to death' but it's clearly not funny, when you hear true stories like this one, and we'd heard of another girl like this, who was lucky enough just to spend a few days in the hospital.

so she happily became the DD for life and a few years later, she's also become an east coast mormon (her husband's religion) - and now she's pregnant. so 3 strikes for no drinking!

now, if i could only get her & her family to move to the SLC area with me!!

thanks everyone. It turns out that it wasn't the alcohol poisoning that killed Kent. Because of a drunken debauchery, he tripped and fell down some stairs knocking his head a few times. After a brief irritated reaction from Kent, he came back to "normality" and everyone thought he was ok. LIttle did anybody know.

Later that night a few friends brought Kent home and put him to bed. Kent never woke up. He suffered contusions to the head and internal bleeding. His best friend found him the next morning cold, stiff, and lifeless. He was bleeding black blood from his nose...probably from all the blood to the head.

Its really unfortunate because he was such a good friend, a kind soul and always wanted to live no matter how bad life got to him. And he did have a pretty rough life.

Last night Jen and I went over to 'their' house to offer our condolensces. Some were really shaken up, others were concealing it. They had a lot to deal with yesterday from calling friends and family to finding their best friend lifeless.

Such a silly way to go but it happens. Too bad it does.
