i watched this for the first time a couple nights ago. not my favorite comic book movie ever, but pretty good. entertaining, at least.
The movie is obviously heavily influenced by the comic book, dumbfuck.
Of course, to realize that you must know how to read in the first place.

And they're both batman stories which share the same title, one vastly superior to the other. So it's not unatural to compare them anyway.

Went through this thread to find out the gist on what everyone is thinking...and I agree. I loved this movie. The Joker freaked me out, but I was thrilled with his performance at the same time. Dookey gave an excellent review a few pages back. I want to see this on IMAX...I'll have to find out if it's still playing.
Oh and for the record Batman Begins was good, but if it sucked in any way it was because of Katie Holmes. That bitch can't act. She completely ruined it for me. Thank God they replaced her for The Dark Knight.

of course the movie is influenced by the book. batman in general was influenced by the book. but this story does NOT resemble the batman of the book in the slightest. in the book, he is a 55 year old drunk who has given up on batman, and i won't go into the specifics but needless to say this movie did not include superman, the death of batman, the death of alfred, the death of the joker, any incarnations of robin or selina kyle, mutants, or whatnot.

batman begins was influenced by the book as well. all i'm saying is you used a direct comparison, as if the movie had been based off the book, when in fact only the title was taken. it isn't fair to compare the two when one only borrows from the ideas of the other.

Oh really? Please name 5 movies so far this year that are better suited for the nomination.

2008 = t3h suck for movies. The Dark Knight is a bit of light in a sea of turds.

    This season's powerhouse Oscar list:

    1. Wall-e
    2. In Bruges
    3. The Dark Knight
    4. Indiana Jones
    5. Cloverfield

Please present your own list of honest contenders. Good luck.

^ I hear you. I was actualy comparing the best (IMO) batman comics to the best batman movie... And even if the movie is actualy more inspired by the killing joke, its sense of despair and general darkness is very Milleresque.

Oh shit. Sorry for the delayed response. Didn't see this. I wish I did because I would have been a lot more pissed off to read it back then, however...I'm not that angry now.

And I don't have a list because my point was that, in general, the movie was shit and I don't think it deserves a nomination. Look at it, and look at the past winners and nominees for best picture, and honestly tell me one that you would compare it to.

But I agree that this year sucked for movies and that it probably will get nominated.

    I guess we'll see.

There's a lot of movies that didn't deserve to win, but were the best turd in the sewer.

That said, where would you like to meet for your public teabagging?

Well, nominations are being announced Jan 22. And considering I have a similar arrangement with a few other people, I could possibly fit you in sometime around Jan 28. Let me know whats good for you.

But my prediction is nomination for Ledger, who deserves it, a sound nomination and nothing else.

    Best Picture noms:

    Benj. Button--Released 12/25/08
    Frost/Nixon--Released 12/5/08
    Milk--Released 11/26/08
    The Reader--Released 12/10/08
    Slumdog--Released 11/12/08

I'm glad Hollywood decided to crap out a couple decent flicks just in time to make me look like a jackass.

In the wake of The Batman, I revisited both Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.

I was never a fan of Batman Begins and, imho, it hasn't aged well. I always felt that they diluted the story with too many villains, not giving enough story to any of them (interestingly enough, The Batman does the same thing, yet the presence of three villains in that film worked for me).
The biggest takeaways from these two Nolan efforts was Christian Bale's hilarious Batgrowl, how clunky the Batsuit was (wtf was up with the crushed velvet cape anyway?), and the sheer ridiculousness of the Batmobile.
As for The Dark Knight? That film is completely saved by Heath Ledger's presence. His take on The Joker is beyond fantastic.

In the wake of Hans Zimmer winning an Oscar for his Dune score, I dug this up:
