Offhand I don't remember the reason Alta changed course, but MRG was also one of the first to allow snowboarding.

    Early adapters, both of them.

And I'm pretty sure that MRG went back because of derailment of the single chair.

Up the snowbird with a board. some how stash it really well. have a mate bring another board up to ride down on. Next day or same day. ride up the alta lifts with skis and a backpack with your snow board boots. get to your stashed board get geared up and poach away?
You don't even need to go through that much effort. My bro-in-law just hiked baldy from the bird side. He traversed and rode down the ridge to Alta dropping back into the bird via the keyhole. I believe there are signs that say skiers only beyond a certain point; but, no one stopped him.

A few years ago, I did actually see a couple of boarders shred down ballroom. I can only guess they did the same... hiking baldy from the Bird side. I thought it was quite funny. Ballroom would deffinately make a better poach vid. And one could actually say he poached Alta top to bottom.

My crew is full of boarders and skiers. None of the boarders really have any interest in riding at Alta. Traversing to the high T, Ballroom, the Castle, and the rest of the goods at Alta would (as has been said many times before) suck. Getting to the goods at Alta is like getting out to the bookends in Mineral. I never see any boarders out there.

I did this many times to get home when I lived at the GMD for a season, without getting heckled at all. The trick was to carry plenty of speed or you may not make it through the flats at the bottom of germ, then one would look like a gigantic KOOK for sure.

Poaching ballroom is not original or ballsy, I think that a highboy poach may hold some credibility, as far as poaching is concerned. As far as Alta snow safety is concerned, I don’t think they will find it very credible at all.

Well they banned boarders from the single because of that and a bunch of punk boarders gave Betsy some shit about it so she banned them all.

Long story short, they got themselves banned.

    So...

How about a boarder takes a split board.
    buys a pass for Alta.
Rides Wildcat, and skins up Baldy.

Gets to the top of say Baldy Main Chute, puts the board back together, shreds all the way to the bottom. And then he or she splits the board and gets on the lift?

Or would they even allow him/her onto the lift?

I ski with boarders all the time (especially working at Brighton). I see know difference between punks on a board and pubks on skis. Who cares what they are riding. I just hate punks. The idiots in the Bambi Basin video were just that.

That being said, I know some boarders that are damn good on the cirque traverse that will openly admit that alta would suck for boarders. It would be a junk show of collisions with skiers running them off the high t. The Castle, Backside, Gunsight, the shoulder... at this point they are all a race on a powder day and boarders would easily lose the race. They would spend powder days riding the scraps by the time they got to it all and strapped their boards back on.

Poaching albion is a joke. Impressive hike from Crest Lift at Brighton though. They could have waited a couple weeks and had an easier trip from milly. Besides, every year there are some boarders that poach their way to the highboy party from the 'bird, I simply offer them a beer and laugh. They at least do it in style from top to bottom.

Offering a $5,000 reward to break the posted rules at a ski resort? Thats just irresponsible on the part of Burton. I bet if some rich dear valley skier gets hurt because of it, their on staff lawyers will have a lawsuit on burton in minutes!

I think I would do anything short of letting Rosie O'donnell sit on my face to get that few minutes of my life back.

Poaching's not bad as long as you poach to ski something sick. Going through all that effort to shred groomers automatically classifies you as a dumbass! Poach Alta to ski albion basin?! Nice one douch

They would own the company. I bet they could sue now, with the video evidence and the web encouragement, based on incitement to riot*, and prolly get paid out pretty good. Like more than Burton has.

Jake Burton Carpenter is one desperate fucking dumbass. And he's gonna get more desperate before he's done.

*I'm not a lawyer, but I can talk out of my ass like one.

    Clock's ticking.

Jake's WIFE got inducted into the snowboard hall of fame. BTW, she's no craig Kelly on the hill. Proof that snowboarding is totally tapped out.

Don't really care about who allows and disallows what.

The only things I can say is that if this is supposed to be a promo to help promote the permission of snowboarders to these resorts, don't use misspellings (example: "he said 'nitch'") and talk like an idiot (example: "we just poached your mountain, son.").

However, some of those videos definitely make skiing out to be an unglamorous sport...I mean, look at some of those fucking gapers.

I think Jake Burton putting out this contest makes snowboarders look like a joke and a bunch of anarchists. I used to snowboard and I can say I am glad I am not associated with this. Granted, I have nothing wrong with snowboarders, and I ride with many, but the ones in that video are just plain disrespectful. Jummping over people's skis, cutting people off, riding over people's skis. Oh well, what can you do? Creative advertising twist for Burton maybe?

BTW that MRG picture is great!

    I agree.

BTW, here is a shot I took of a boarder poaching Alta/Ballroom on April 1st, 2005, 11:19 AM:

...and a close-up crop if anyone wants to print a WANTED poster:

I have nothing against snowboarding, in fact I think its a really neat sport and a great addition to snow sports. However, that video/campaign gives boarders a bad rap and I would be embarrassed to be associated with such morons.

You're not rebelling or being cool, you're being a PITA and deliberately griefing other people. Not to mention that based on acts like that resorts are likely to respond in the opposite direction.

Hmmm... pretty presumptuous intro to the video; I don't think Gandhi & MLK would give a fuck if people wanted to sneak onto green runs with their snowboards.

If I remember correctly, Alta wanted snowboarders to have poles so you could push yourself through the lift line and not hold everyone up.

Back then, we never went "snowboarding". It was more commonly referred to as "Wintersticking" due to that being the only kind of boards that we rode.
