    Webhosting

Looking for some simple webhosting to make a website. There doesn't need to be any online shopping or anything just space for me to build a simple site with html or java. Whats the best. Whats economical. I know nothing about this although have edited enough sites that I fell comfortable making one

You'll get a hundred different replies to what is the best one out there. There are thousands of them and everyone thinks they are good until a problem comes up (disaster like the recent ice storms or a huricane- do they keep running?) But you will pay more for a good one that has a disaster recovery or redunancy built in to keep the sites up.

There are a number of webhosting forums and review sites out there- webhostingtalk.com is one that you may want to check out for some discussions.

Even if you are an experienced web host designer, if you have not developed web sites (including having to load stuff on the servers) then make sure the control panel is complete and handles stuff that you need- if you have specific requirements like SQL, PHP, etc. also do searches based on those also. If you have any idea on the transfer and storage requirements, that is a starting point- otherwise you will have to select a plan and give it a start.

I would also recommend that if the plan includes the domain name- MAKE sure that you own and control the domain name and not the hosting company. If at any time you want to move you do not want the domain name being held hostage. Register it yourself if you want to be safe.

I've used 1and1.com for a few sites and like it, just my $0.02.

Been using it for few years now. Just be careful with the maze of a sign up that tries every which way to upsell you on shit you don't need. The service is damn good though.

Good stuff, own your domain name maybe find a smaller local company where you can talk to the people that run the servers. Having a server go down and losing data is terrible and should never happen disaster recovery and backups are important.

A couple of guys who graduated from my highschool about 5 years before me started www.hostrocket.com and are rolling in it now. That said, really good hosting from my experience.

    Powweb.com
Super cheap (~$7 a month) for a powerful hosting plan.
Haven't had any serious problems with them in the 4 years I've dealt with them.
Do what you like, Like what you do.
