Washing machine stuck on final spin cycle

OK, my washing machine is onthe fritz. no matter what i do to reset the cycle, it will always go to the final spin, even after it finishes.

Is it like my ancient dishwasher, where a little overflow box underneath will occasionally fill up with water and keep a flotation switch activated which makes the machine think it's still full of water? I have to drain that overflow box to make it work again, and the easiest way is to suck it out with a long straw resulting in several mouthfuls of stagnant soam scummy water.
