Whatever happened to the Line bindings?

Anyone? The idea seems to have kinda stagnated... werent' they supposed to be released in early winter of '03?

You know, I believe they did release then. Ever since they were put on the market, they wouldn't stop releasing. You'd put them on, go to ski, but they would just release!

Most of the bindings bought were sent back on warranty. They are working on the design, I think they are slated to come out again early winter '04-'05.

Something about they were fukked. I don't think they ever shipped due to manufacturing problems and SARS.

I talked to a friend who's opening a shop in Boulder this August (the shop will be called "Jibij" BTW ) and he'll be selling and demoing Line products including the binding. He says production is now in a new plant and the binding rocks.

yeah what happened was the plastics manufacturer they were working with was having internal problems (the main guy who was working on the parts for the bindings quit the factory, the VP died; they might've gotten dropped as a client completely, too), and there were just a lot of things that needed fixing on the binding in the first place. a few did get released to various shops, but a lot of them broke (toe pieces apparently liked to come off a lot) so line did a recall on them. they've pretty much worked out the kinks for this year - more metal parts and some minor design tweaks. i remember the chief designer for the binding say that they jumped into the project too quick and failed to really check and double check their work. but it should be a solid piece of gear for next season, for sure.

Sounds like good engineering practice to me.

Rode a chair with a girl who had them and had no complaints but then again she was pretty small. I'm pretty sure she worked at Fresh here in Calgary and they were selling them for a while.

I saw some at a trade show recently. the rep said they had gone back to the drawing board and come up with a new design that's available next season. he seemed pretty psyched on them and had a good answer for every question I could come up with about them.

they seem like a really cool design, I can't wait to see them in action.

Yeah, a lot of tele bindings have come on the market and suffered a similar fate their first year. Despite their best efforts, it is difficult for small companies to fully test bindings. One tele company, Rainey Designs, said "fuck it" and solicited 300 guinea pigs from the public at large to test their first year binding. The next year you got a new pair of bindings and a T-Shirt.

Skiers really need to standarize the binding mounting system like snowboards, that would be sweet, thats the best part of the line binders

I would never buy bindings that new to the market for the same reason that I would never buy skis from a ski company that's just gotten into the market; You're a product tester whether you know it or not.

I just don't understand why they made the binding attachment footprint so tiny. Have they found some way to bypass the concept of leverage?
