    Fattest Pow Ski in 2008?

    Duret Monstre Fat 186 (203-177-193)
    http://www.duretskis.com/index.php?idarticle=289

Kinda makes their 150-120-138 "Monstre Pow 191" seem thin.

    Anyone ever try this monstrosity?

the waist to length ratio makes them look like snow-blades

I understand their purpose if you're a 300 lb skier... Certainly not the weight of the skier duret uses to advertise their gear, though.

10 years ago (or something like that), people would have said the same thing about a ski with a 120mm waist.

Someone at Silverton had them. He said they like to go extremely fast and don't like to turn. It would have been interesting to watch him ski but we were having too much fun in the pow.

    989 Euros. Good god.

That's because you are in-fact buying 2 monoboards, as xp has previously said.

As it happens, Duret also manufacture snowboards and monoboards. One of which is exactly the same specs and graphic as their huge ski. So, I don't know how much kudos you want to give them, except maybe for offering a pretty good deal on a 2 monoboard package.

Check their web site and find the video of someone skiing these things, it's in their somewhere. I'd love to try them but in the vid they sort of look inhibiting rather than enabling, even on powder.

They did spam this board and Epic (and french board Skipass) in early 2007, about the Monstre. There're a couple of threads about it.
Basicaly an over sized, obese, version of a comventional all moutain design...
The most innovative aspect of the monstre is that it's a new way to use their monoski molds.

It's enough to make you rue the days when the French scoffed at anyone who skied without their ankles glued together.

The good news is the wide brake for the Duke should bend out to get around those babies.

My first snowboard was made by Duret. Back in 1986. Wow. I wish I still had it. 185 swallowtail with small, soft plastic bindings and we shoved a ski boot liner into a Sorel SnowBear and rode the powder (couldn't turn much on piste). I recently emailed the president of Duret to see if he had any of the old boards laying around he'd sell me for a wall mount. He didn't and said someone had tried to sell him one recently for 1000Euros. Nuts. My first look at what today I'd call an Alpine Snowboard was actually a Duret monoski. A friend mounted some bindings to it at an angle so he could ride it as a snowboard in a KL (speed skiing) race. He got about 1/2 way down before air got under the board and he lost control. He crashed through the timing lights at around 110-120kmh!

In any case, if you're ever really in this situation make sure you at least bargain in a couple of fluffers.

Forgot the obligatory famous "Monstre Fat" picture off their website..
I'd like to see people actually turn these things left and right a few times....

That's because you are in-fact buying 2 monoboards, as xp has previously said.
Sorta like LibTech selling their "Narrow Ass Snowboards" only in singles...(gotta love that)...

Heh. I managed to unlearn that technique about five years ago, but still fall back into it at times.

if you think about it, it might be cheaper for 2 folks to go in on a pair of MF's and then split them up as monoskis, no?

    scratch that!

    MF = 989euros

    Mountain series Mono = 425euros

so it would be cheaper to buy 2 monoskis than a pair of the MFs...

I saw that dude as well and thought the exact same thing. I did see him cruising through the trees later in the day though, so apparently he didn't have too much trouble maneuvering them.

The mono clips (monopopow and Viva) are FKNA.

I saw a guy on em at Silverton. He said the skis only liked to go fast and straight and turning on them was not so much...

I saw him later in the day too, but I'm pretty sure he switched to his Fat-ypuses by lunch time or so.
