I have skied great snow below treeline all month too. Very little coral reef.

Aspect and timing are very, VERY important right now. Esp if you're skiing below the alpine.

Question about conditions in Colorado in October

Would I post that here? I'm new to the forum and don't want a slap on the wrist from the forum police on my maiden voyage!

^^^ don't listen to that guy - he's trying to sandbag you and get you to come out when its icy and crowded - you know February or March.

October = Top notch conditions around here.

hahah well I'm flying blind so if I hit a few things along the way so be it

The one caveat - this would be my FIRST TRIP EVER out West. I've been ice skating on East Coast groomers since I was a kid. My cousin's getting married in Denver in mid-October and I'd like to extend my trip and do some actual skiing for once while I'm out there. Could always come back, but a taste would be nice...

You'll likely get a nice taste of the WROD. Plan on half a day skiing, half a day doing something more fun (for that time of year) like hiking or biking. Both are so good then.

I'm afraid your chances of doing any "actual skiing" out here would be about as slim as they can get.

But as someone else posted - Feb and March is a crowded, crappy snow nightmare out here.

I'd shoot for the week between Christmas and New Years.

I've skied 30 inches of blower at wolf creek on October 10th a couple years ago. Wouldn't bank on something like that happening again though.

Mid October is nothing to bank on.

Have hit powder in September and October but also can be nothing. For the white ribbon of death Arapahoe basin and Loveland might be open. From the history it looks like Abasin has opened as early as 10/9 but more typically late October.

Check the conditions before you come but I wouldn't make expensive plans in advance based on hoping for good conditions.

Fishing can also be great around then.

This. Once the leaves have changed, it becomes a crap shoot as far as outdoor activities for a couple of months. You might get good skiing, you might get good hiking/biking, but you might get raw cold wet days with no snow.
