Breck this morning was surprisingly awesome !!!

Got first laps on the t-bar - lulus was knee deep blower in most spots! 3 laps there and imperial opened - I was one of the first chairs up. Peak 7 bowl was untracked and awesome ! One of the best runs I have ever had there. Knee deep the whole way down and the sun was out !

I guess the conditions were shitty enough yesterday that no one was skiing the high alpine terrain. I was not expecting to ski so much pow today.

Breck was offering unlimited refills yesterday. Snowed all day. Way Out and Horseshoe bowl were offering face shots all afternoon. Low winds and flat light. I'll take it.

Just talked to a buddy who was up there and he said it was wind blown crap and had about 6cm of crazy rain. Maybe find a different objective?

Saw really good stability in the Summit zone in the last week. Things skied well. Things got skied that normally aren't safe to ski this time of year... and no wind, cold clear nights... guess what crew everywhere, persisted, and got buried? I think the SH will be our shallow layer of concern for a while. Will be interesting to check when I get home next week.

I was wrong. It took 11 days, not 14 Phoenix Spellbound opened today. Still waiting on 3rd bowl.

Pheonix/Spell was dang good too! Best coverage I've skied it with. What does your crystal ball say for 3rd?

BFD, that was from a different thread in a different forum... why are you posting it in here? You are really that bothered that several people were trying to give you friendly, helpful information when you presented yourself as a visitor from AK asking basic questions about "extreme terrain" and getting well known place names wrong? So you post up a random cell phone pics from who knows where with no information and think it proves something? If you feel so defensive about a friendly post in which I said I don't know the current intricacies of NSJ, then I'll suggest that you take a close look at your potential human factors red flag right there.

This thread is about strategic shoveling and Slide Zone is not about that kind of ego. So take it back there if you must continue.

My ski partner here who I value highly knows I spend too much time here. He asked for me not to post any photos so I buried the photo here because I figured you would see it and few others. Plus it involved a bit of shoveling. This photo is taken in the south san juans somewhere . It is pretty evident you statement that the southern mountains are continental as always is not correct. I am new to an intermountain snowpack but I am pretty sure 10 ft deep with wet rounding facets at the ground would be an intermountain snowpack. If I am wrong I imagine one of the professionals here will set me straight. I was trying to generate a conversation about snowpacks in other areas. I think allot of good things have gone on in the snowpack this year that may be atypical of colorado. I read the avie reports and I do not see anyone mentioning obvious signs of stability such as settlement cones. Is that only happening here. I doubt it. As far as my statement on Telluride I was just trying to find out what is skiable when you are at 150% of snow water equivalence. maybe many things are skiable that are not often skiable this time of year. Not every backcountry skier is a 20 something know it all from summit county with an airbag. I imagine there are some very experienced people in Telluride who enjoy skiing those types of lines and know how to do it safely. I would not base my decision to ski something based on tracks but i could possibly make the decision to drive all the way down there to check things out based on that.

If you ever quarry blocks for a snow shelter the Voile Tele Pro cuts excellent blocks. making it a great expedition shovel.

I really doubt Summit has much expertise on anything. I will say the topic of shoveling is something I am an expert on.

I haven't been on the hill in a few, so I don't know if they already ran ropes, etc. But if we get a foot or two like they're calling for, it will be another week. You skiing again today?

This will be my last post on the matter. If I post here again I will stick to resort talk. I hope you learned that Colorado does have intermountain snowpacks. That was why I posted the photo. I am sorry the photo is not better. I also wanted to show the change in the facets at the ground. danno had asked about the presence of PWL's in an intermountain snowpack which is actually why I dug the pit. I was curious what happened to the very weak layer at the ground that was terrifying me the first couple of weeks of the season. As for stalking on PM i simply sent you a recent photo of people skiing the line i was asking about. Yes I have 32 friends on Facebook. In 60 years of life you get separated from many people. It is an easy way to check in when I want. And some of these old friends still share similar interests as me like backcountry skiing. here is the stalking harassing PM

Glad you got some good turns in. I haven't been up there in a year or two but my favorite are is in the trees off road just skiers left of that tree cut run that ends near the sledding hill. Good times

the skiing sucks this season, so just give it up and think about golf

it's all rain crusted and hard pack now, thanks to global warming, the big snow is over for the year, the trees are still boney, lift lines blow, every tool and their grandma is in the back country (or slack country), the drive to the mountains suck no matter what time of day you try, call it a season now, or just argue the snow pack to death cause you might know more than the other guy while sitting behind the computer screen. just another bullshit colorado whiny bitch ski season for sure
