Good read here....
ROLL TIDE ROLL
MJ yesterday, the beav today.. It didn't suck
Day 84. Today was a great day to be a stormtrooper, winds at SB be damned. Gully, chutes, and anything N facing were superb. Knee deep if you knew where to look. Manana will be $$$ for sure no matter the report. Hooray for the refresh.
It was 60 degrees here in Durango today. I was in a short sleeves and chacos. What's winter again?
At least you people are getting some....
It was snowing all day at ABasin, and pretty much snowing since. It dropped down to Dillon about 4pm.. Hopefully, the winds calmed down a bit, and it gets fluffy again. If the sun is out in any form tomorrow, ABasin will be superb. If not, it's Ray Charles time again.
Wow, someone got luck at Berthoud yesterday. http://avalanche.state.co.us/caic/ob...p?obs_id=41014 Winter's back in the northern mountains, and so are persistent slab (and apparently deep persistent slab) problems.
Hot damn thats a bad one. Check your shorts? The top 8-10" was touchy but the deeper 14" layer seemed to be bonding well.
Is the obs gone - link dead and nothing recent in table? Anybody want to summarize?
Saw the mention in the daily. 6-10'... jeez
That's weird that the record disappeared. The CAIC's reference summed up most of the info in the ob: "A large and potentially deadly avalanche was triggered yesterday near Berthoud Pass yesterday. This avalanche was triggered by a skier after making 6 to 8 turns on the slope. The skier was able to ski off of the slab while the avalanche broke 6 to 10 feet deep. The snowpack is reaching a critical tipping point and we should not be surprised to see additional large and deadly avalanches."
The slide was triggered on Mines 2 path, north facing, above treeline. Skier (or rider) triggered 6-8 turns in, slide failed at the ground on depth hoar (not sure if it failed as a wind slab first and stepped down), 12-15 foot debris pile, described as a "4 out of 5" for the path, or R4 I believe. The photo of the crown from in the path/debris was impressive and scary. Deep crown across basically the whole starting zone.
Photo of Mines 2 path here for context (#3 in photo of mines peak): http://www.frontrangeskimo.com/berth...ss-mines-peak/
The photo of the slide is still on the Front Range forecast page. Here it is:

Big slide, beware of wind loaded slopes for sure this time of year. They are just waiting for a reason to break to the ground right now.
Will the stock market tank? I have no idea.
Will my wife blow me later tonight? 100% Nope.
Will someone ski and trigger an avalanche in Mines during March? 100% Yes.
Every. Single. Year.
