Sure, but all the ingredients were there for something like this, and could be seen before the weekend got here.

Absolutely dumping right now on I70 headed to the tunnel. Holy shit. Easily 1.5 inches per hour.

They are still plucking cars off the road. Cdot did a hell of job getting the road back open. There was 7 inches of snow on the road when we were leaving wilderness 20 minutes ago. All of it is new since 4pm.

Just passed a trucker sliding backwards down the hill across two lanes. He came damn close to hitting the car in front of us.

    No chains, of course.

Thanks GOD it's monday! Front Rangers go to work like rats in a cage and we get to enjoy the mountains in peace. Try not to crash into anything on your way to work in your fucking 2wd Honda with five year old tires on it! Seriously, can we just all-out ban 2wd, rear wheel drive, bald tires, and trucks without chains past Golden?

Other than it was rather warm yesterday, it's got to be good. Aspen's gated terrain was creamy goodness.

My friend claimed they couldn't get there due to road closures, but I have no idea if this was after the fact rationalization. Funny thing, they would have gotten home faster driving to Kremmling and over Bert.

Yeah, bad traffic was expected, and I suppose one must always account for the possibility of epic bad, but this was EPIC BAD. Every weekend CDOT posts warning signs saying traffic will be bad, and when there's snow, expect it to be worse. But 3 hours to go from Keystone to the on ramp? Stories of an 80 mile drive taking 9 hours? Christ, just close the road.

You know, this really needs to be the solution in bad weather events. We impose chain restrictions on trucks (but don't seem to enforce them), we need to impose 4wd/chains on all vehicles in certain conditions, and then freaking enforce them!

I'm sure theres a way, but hard to enforce with the volume of traffic that i70 creates.

Came back from CB Sunday afternoon. After a detour south of Monarch Pass, 285 was smooth sailing until South Park, where it became real icy and heavy traffic dropping down from Breck. Total trip took 5.5 hours, so not too bad. Amazes me that more folks don't head out 285. More snow, less people, less lift lines, less traffic.

If there is any weather, I70 will be a horror story due to folks trying to value out their Epic pass.

other than widening it or metering I say make it a toll road on weekends with a hefty toll, say $20 to get to the mountains. Less traffic, more $$ and funding for CDOT to make future improvements on the road. Although I'm sure vail and all of the other resorts wouldn't go for that since it'd cut into their corporate profits i'm sure.

The resorts need to lean on CDOT or CO staties, or whoever the fuck can at least try and enforce a chain law for all vehicles during a storm like that. Sounds like it's still a shitshow up there this AM, with people unable to get past the tunnel either way. They do it in CA and WA. No reason not to do it here. And I say resorts b/c people are going to get fed up with this shit (not just Front Rangers, but all the tourists) and go elsewhere. Of course I think I'd love that, but that would be awful for the local economy.

You do know the only traffic VR cares about is coming up Friday night? Mr. Day Tripper not buying a $7.00 beer or a $3.00 cup of coffee-you're out they do not give a rats ass. Condo owners or condo weekenders buzzing out Sunday am to beat the jackass traffic pay the bills kiddo. They are the ones with kids in ski school Saturday, buying food, drinks, passes, equip at their shops. This is why nothing has been done or ever will be done.

Please refrain from all reference of 285. It is my lifeline and regular commute route. The last thing we need is asshat drivers coming over who don't know how to play connect the dots in a ground blizzard.

I left Copper @ noon yesterday. Travel signs said 3hrs to Denver. I figured it'd be the same going 285 so I stayed on 70. I got just past the Silverthorn on ramp and hit a dead stop. I was locked in at that point. Over 3 hours to get to the tunnel, near 5 to get home. I consider myself lucky.

They came over here. It seemed like half the stuck vehicles had CA plates. The kids climbing out of the minivan and pushing it up the hill was amusing to watch.
