My butthurt really sank in on Sunday hitting rocks right and left...then realizing it was almost March. My first full season in Colorado, and by far the worst season I've had in the past 30 years. At least last year I had the first half in the Cascades.

There was a guy in the T-bar line on Sunday trying to stomp his blown out edge back in so he could keep skiing. Gotta hand it to him for trying.

Last March was an anomaly. I still enjoyed the skiing. But it was the hottest and driest I've seen in my 44 years of skiing here.

Walsh's was gooooood this morning. Untracked for about 2 hours. Can't complain.

Dude, you moved here for a (presumably) good job; which is directly related to the weather.
You've been on tgr a decade, long time skier; seems like that you might have picked up that CO is flatland in the desert. I respect you for your line of work no doubt. But maybe modify your perspective a bit and you'll have some fun.

Meanwhile I had an awesome time at WP today. Kind of a bummer about the new lift through Parsen bowl. Had not ridden that since it was built a few years back, I used to like the solitude in those trees. Silver lining is no lift lines at all.

But the base was nice and soft, ankle to boot deep most of the day.
Dodged one windlip, two rocks, and one snake.

Back at my desk and going to give the illusion I've been cranking on this client project all morning..

Yeah, was thinking the same thing at Copper this weekend.

It took until Mid February to open the backside, and there’s a ton of rocks lurking under the surface. We took the snowcat up Copper Bowl on Sunday. Patrol has opened a section about 30 yards wide running 500’ back to the cat track, which you had to stay on all the way down to Mtn Chief. Anything outside of that narrow corridor was a foot of unconsolidated powder over rocks and scrub brush.

A rough year for CO. Oh well, it’s not like our neighbors are having great years. Went to Utah in January and it was pretty marginal. Tahoe hasn’t had snow in practically two months. Jackson and Targhee are both below average. Good old La Nada for you.

It's a rough year for Summit county...not sure I'd say Monarch, Wolf, Steamboat, etc have had a "bad" year

Things aren’t terrible up at those places. I’ve had a fucking riot up at the ‘Boat this year with some great pow, but even those spots are below average. Man, it will feel great just to get back to normal around here.

Vail skied extremely nicely today. There was some nice powder out there. Yesterday's wind really helped heal the mountain from the horrendous damage done by the heavy weekend crowds. It smoothed the bowls nicely and then last night it snowed some more. It was really smooth out there. Last weekend was really bad and choppy.

Today lift lines were almost non-existent. Great day.

Id say the upper mountain got more than 6", some places felt closer to 8" plus.

Are you 2 feet tall? Knee deep or waist deep? Just because snow sprays up and hits you in the balls doesn't mean it's waist deep.

Thank you for saying it, because I was about to. The amount of "knee deep" days during 4" snow reports lately is laughable.

I'm actually 6'5"...I just meant there were waist deep spots from wind deposit on Iron Mask, right off the edge

There's definitely some deeper spots out there available if you work/look for them, rather than sitting at a computer on the front range telling people how shitty the conditions are. Go ride your bike.

You are one of the whiniest little bitches who posts here. If all you do is ski down Avanti at Vail on a 4" day, then of course, all you will find is 4" of snow. But, when it snows 25" in 72 hours, then gee, what do you think is going to be piled up in other spots on the mountain?

Also, sometimes the report is just plain wrong. I had the deepest inbounds day I ever had on a 5" report day this year. There was legitimately 10"+, and windloaded slopes were easily 20" or more. I was getting non-manufactured faceshots on every single turn all the way down a 1000' straight fall line run. Stayed untracked for 4 runs in just that one spot. Sometimes you just get lucky, but you won't as long as you keep passing it up for bitching and biking.

From today's Durango Herald: It’s been worse, it’s been better

The stats don't include how many fair, bluebird days and nice views with no one else around.

I knew what I was getting into moving here, and I'm not regretting the move. More that I've been waiting all season for the season to get started...this season has a lot of resemblance to a hockey strike.

Meh, although folks do overhype snow depth all the time, the ones that bug me are:

“Free Refills”. Unless it’s dumping 2-3” an hour all day, it doesn’t count in my book.
“Nuking”. Sorry, but when a cold front passes through and for 30 minutes pukes snow, that’s not nuking. Nuking is continuous heavy snowfall.

No, I'm just realistic. This is the Facebook generation... where people feel the need to brag about what they're doing ALL the time, so their friends feel jealous and they seem cool. It happens WAY too much on TGR, when there hasn't been more than 4" of snow in a week and people are bragging about knee-deep runs.

I get it, snow piles up in different amounts at different spots on the mountain. But waist-deep on a 4" day at Keystone? Give me a fucking break.

CO Jong here. Coming to visit my son this weekend at CU for his fraternity's Dad weekend. We're skiing at Breck on Sat/Sun. Debating which skis to bring. Kind of only want to pack one pair. So, skinnier on-piste skis or fatter off-piste skis for Sat/Sun? I usually ski the Lhasas (wider skis) only when there's three dimensional snow that's ankle deep or better. Also, can I expect really cold weather, or typical Tahoe type weather? In other words, do I need to put the ear flaps on my helmet?

Ask for change for a nickel if you see us. Both have smith helmets, he has black Patagucci pants, mine are black Arcteryx with dead head patches on them. My jacket is mustard green, I think his is brown (but not sure about that).

You've got to show up to get the goods and appreciate the time spent even if it's not ideal. Some of my most memorable powder days were at Eldora of all places. More often than not it wasn't great, but just being 'in the mode' at the right moments when it was nuking and right attitude, it was well worth it. Growing up in the midwest and east coast driving for 3 plus hours to ski on a bump or bulletproof slopes with long lift lines definitely helps me appreciate how good we do have it in Colorado on many fronts. It may not be ideal all of the time, but there's always touring and skate skiing to get out on a nice day on snow.

As an aside, Blizzard_of_Oz sent me a link to his site with Real time SNOTEL sites is a pretty nice reference for a quick look at where the snow is happening. It can be added to the aforementioned Wx application and I'm finding I using it first before looking at other weather sources.

Damn, you're right. You are much, much better than me because you live in the mountains and I live in town. (by the way, I don't work in a cube, and I don't live in Denver)

I'm not pissing in anyone's cheerios... all I did was say I agreed with spthomson. If people are having fun on the slopes, that's all that matters. Let's ski sometime and I'm pretty sure you'll see that I'm as far from a debbie-downer as you'll meet.
