I have a luxury sleeping compartment on the butthurt train, right next to the dining car. In it for the long haul since Dec. 2011.

mmmmm so i know it is not exactly the flavor of the day but,

    snow?

think there is enough up around Harry Gates Hut to merit a trip in the sun later this week?
(area somewhat between aspen and eagle)

not really up for skinning on rocks and clipping stumps, but
if its at all a go, I am itching to go

Two cold powder days this weekend. We must be doing something wrong. No wait, leaving summit county is almost always the right move. Ha!

Posted this in the summit/eagle conditions thread, but a good comparison of levels from yesterday compared to almost exactly 2 years ago. Not even recognizable as the same area.

About to throw myself on (or under) the butthurt train.

If you look at Vail Snotel, even if after this next 10 day dry stretch we have the same snow as 2011 ... they're still fucked until May where they squeak out a week or two of "above average" snowpack just as things quickly melt out.

The blue line to the left of the black bar is this years snowpack. Then a 10 day stretch with no precip (now) and to the right of the black line is 2011 data. In other words it would take a heroic effort for us to get back within the ballpark of average.

Not quite so dire in other locales though. Bert would be in fine shape if we could just have 4 months of 2011 snow...

And up by Steamboat they would be pretty stoked too...

We might be down, but not TOTALLY out yet. Unless you really like Vail... Everyone's just ultra fucking gun-shy because of how last year ended.

Just going to state what others have said...at this point, I don't even care about the skiing aspect of no snow. It is more about freaking out a bit about the fires and lack of water we will have this Spring and Summer.

I predict fist fights over jack-asses watering their Kentucky Blue Grass lawns in my neighborhood.
You should have been here yesterday!

yeah, at this point I'd pretty much like to avoid a repeat (or worse) of last summer, and be able to hike and not see smoke all summer

If it's that bad, there will probably be water restrictions put in place right away to conserve. Reservoirs are already hit pretty hard from this last summer.

On a side note, anyone have any hike to hot springs they'd recommend? I already know Conundrum and Rainbow, just looking for other ideas.

It's been so cold that what you find when you get there will most likely not even come close to "hot". Commercial one's are definitely your best bet for soothing the hurtz.

I will be soothing the butthurt at Strawberry for the time being, but just trying to gather some idea for summer hikes.

Looks like high pressure for another 2 weeks or so, the upside is that my kids think I'm a good Dad.

It's about time a few more of you started to embrace the butthurt.

Hey good news though, the models show a pattern change in two weeks or so. That'll definitely happen.

all I can say is that the t-bar the past 3 days in breck has been awesome. everyone is afraid to venture out past the center of horseshoe bowl thinking they'll hit every rock in the world or something, been slaying fresh inbounds the past 3 days haha.

Indeed. I have my finger on the button of a plane ticket, sick of building bikes and biking in the mud.

I will come east and the pattern will change. Or i will buy beers. Maybe both!
