I'm another person out of the hundreds (thousands?) that have been bullied by IF cops. After my experience and hearing countless people with similar stories, I'm convinced they're aggressively pulling people over with the sole intent to force the search of a vehicle. This especially applies to cars with non-idaho plates and ski racks traveling from Jackson, Wy to points west.

A couple of my friends and I were seperated and questioned for over an hour after a bogus stop. I was told lines like, "you know son, you're friends have been real honest with me, you should probably just tell me what's in the car." to which i continuously replied, "Sir, I don't know what you're talking about, that's a lie."

Nothing happened but--surprise!--we got followed for another fifteen miles by the sheriff.

When in doubt just say "NO." Their salary is seems to be based solely on making money off of your mistakes/stupidity. I want officer "so and so" to continue to make his family wreath a little larger in whatever podunk, inbread, fucking trailer park he grew up in.

Kudos to whoever rolls through IF with a bumper sticker reading, "Gay is Ok when its in a stall in St. Paul," <--that might be the gayest thing I have ever come up with.

I used to drive to Jackson a few times a winter with California plates. My car was always packed. And there was always 3 or 4 guys either hopped up on caffeine or passed out in the car. Inevitably, we'd get followed through town, and on several occasions, all the way to the border. We never got stopped though, but I was shocked that every time the damned trooper would come out of nowhere and tail me. Every damned time. It is like they just sat there and waited for my exact car.

This happened to me by a UT trooper about 30 miles south of the ID border. Rocket box full of stickers but we did have open containers. We were not driniking but had them from the previous weekend ski trip we were driving home from. I had recently bought the car and it had dark windows. I had no idea about the laws. I was well over the tint limit in both UT and ID (I'm from ID). He was in the medium, I had the cruise set at 75. Four miles later I see the lights.

Same thing, he came up to the passenger window and said he smelled booze and asked if we had been drinking. I said it was possible that he smelled booze because we had some in the car (easily visible 1/2 gal bottle of gin in the back seat) but we hadn't been drinking which neither my wife or I had. He told me it was illegal to carry an open container in UT. I didn't even think about it when I packed the car.

I told him he could either poor it out or write me an open container ticket. After I said that, he went into me drinking again. I hadn't been so I said go ahead and get the breathalizer out. He had me walk back to his car where he had the back window open and the drug dog (huge German Sheppherd) decided to let out some growls and barks. This scared the shit out of me. He ran my license. No drunk tests or breathalizer was performed. He had me get back in the car. He said I could keep the gin but I would have to put it in the trunk. Keep in mind, he told me 20 minutes earlier that I could not transport an open container in either the front or trunk of my car. I said I would rather him pour it out and take the bottle because I didn't want to knowingly break the law. He then told me it would be a shame to waste it. At this point I had my cell phone recorder going so I said ok.

I started to get out of the car to put it in the trunk and he said that he would have to do and to pop the trunk. I told him that I had nothing in my truck but four closed duffle bags and he would need a warrant to move them or open them but he was welcome to place the gin on top of them. He said that the gin was probable cause to search the vehicle and bags if he wanted. I said I agreed but that there was nothing to find in the bag. I also said that I thought he originally pulled me over for window tinting. I said nothing further knowing I was probably going to get searched. I had nothing to fear but an open container at this point and was really pissed. I watched him place the gin in the trunk and stare at the duffles in the rear view. He stood there for a good two minutes. He came back, gave me my license and said have a nice day.

    Really fucked up situation.

I know I had an open container and was willing to take the ticket for it but that cop wanted more. Even though my windows were way to dark, after testing them, he had no intention of citing me for them.

Be careful in that area. Those guys are out for blood.

Nobody should be shocked that cops profile cars and go on fishing expeditions, its what they're trained to do. Eye contact is the 1st thing cops look for, so take off the cool guy shades and look the fucker right in the eye until he goes away.
