Two hikers dead in Avy at Snoqualmie Pass??

I just heard they found the bodies of two hikers buried in a slide up at Snoqualmie Pass (kiro radio). Anyone else hear the same thing? Supposedly there was a third that spent the nite in a tent and they found him alive.

SNOQUALMIE PASS, Wash. -- Two of three people who went on a hike in the Cascades over the weekend were found dead on Tuesday. A third hiker survived, officials told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News.

A Bellevue couple and a friend -- all in their 30s -- were hiking on Saturday when an avalanche buried them, officials told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Alison Grande.

One man was able to dig himself out, but he couldn't find his wife and his friend. He crawled to his tent, where searchers found him Tuesday morning.

Officials said the survivor was hoisted from the area by an Army helicopter and taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle early Tuesday afternoon.

Video from KIRO 7 Eyewitness News showed the man, who was conscious and alert, being taken from the Army helicopter after it landed at the hospital.

The hikers disappeared near Snow Lake near the Alpental ski area in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness area of Snoqualmie Pass, about 50 miles west of Seattle in the Cascade Mountains. The lake is at 4,000 feet elevation.

Two feet of new snow fell in the area on Saturday, forecasters said.

Four people in another group of missing hikers were located off the Denny Creek trailhead. They left Sunday and the search began on Monday. Their conditions also are unknown.

Bummer. I would not want to be in that area when the avalanche danger was rated extreme (as it was Sunday evening and Monday).

I haven't seen Snow lake in the winter but I can't imagine too many safe places to camp when the avalanche danger is as high as it was.

The naturals were coming down all over the place Sunday afternoon and that was before it warmed up. Mostly sluffs from the heavy accumulation coming off the cliffs, but they were traveling pretty far as well.

D - Incident there in 03 killed a snowshoer on a day rated high above 4k amd considerable below.

26 backcountry recreationists (all without transceivers, shovels, or probes) were at the scene helping search for the victim when patrol and search and rescue arrived. Her body found one week after accident.

That royally sux. I was up there for a hike in the fall and it's absolutely beautiful up there. But I would definitely not want to be there during avi conditions.

CRYSTAL MOUNTAIN, Wash. -- Search and rescue members are looking for three snowboarders who are missing near Crystal Mountain.

Ed Troyer of the Pierce County Sheriff's Office said searchers were dropped in the area the men were believed to be via helicopter Wednesday afternoon. Crews found evidence of avalanche debris but no sign of the missing men, Troyer said.

Bad weather and a high risk of avalanches kept searchers to a limited area Tuesday and a search plane was unable to spot them.

Kevin Carter, 26, Devlin Williams, 29, and Phillip Hollins, 41, went snowboarding Friday from the Crystal Mountain area and were due back Sunday at 10 p.m. They were reported overdue on Monday.

The three Seattle men are described as backcountry snowboarders and were prepared for two nights in the mountains. They may have an avalanche beacon with them that operates for a distance of about 50 yards.

Rescue members from the Pierce County Sheriff's Office, Tacoma Mountain Rescue, Everett Mountain Rescue, the Ski Patrol and a helicopter from the King County Sheriff's Department are involved in the search.
