Ankle Sprain? Hit rock while skiing...

    Hey all...

Yesterday on Teton Pass I ended up hitting a rock pretty good at the bottom of my line. I feel like an idiot because I know I should have been smarter being it's still early but too late now.

Anyway, I hit the rock with my left ski, the ski stopped and I got pitched forward. The ski did release.

I got up, skied to the bottom, went to work and walked on it okay. It didn't hurt that bad as much as it just felt weird.

Swelling was mild for the most part and I was thinking i was pretty much okay until about 9:30 PM when all of a sudden my mobility was shunk to 1/3 and walking hurt a shit ton. It hurts when flexing forward (aka flexing a ski boot forward) and on the inside part of my ankle. The swelling has increased, but not to any crazy point. Hell, my other ankle which I broke a few years back is still bigger.

I am hopeful this is just a sprain. Nobody breaks any part of their ankle without severe swelling and a lack of being able to bear weight right? Any good tests? It's tender in a few spots but I can still squeeze it all over without tons of pain.

I really don't want to go to the doctor. I'm out of network up here so it'll cost a minimum of 400 bucks.

i've seen people walk on broken ankles with very mild pain before but every break i've seen has been pretty damn swollen. i would definitely get it checked out though, if it is broken you've got to get it stabilized.

i had a similar experience after skiing at loveland pass last year when i hit some soft snow out of a cliff, and double ejected over the front and into a hard faceplant.

i WAY overflexed my boot (almost hit the kneee tot he ski before the release upon video review), and had very similar pain to what you describe.. epsecially the getting worse over the course of the day

i did not break it, and i'd be REALLY suprised if you broke anything. for me it was just a super bad sprain, and although i'm by no means a doctor, i'd think that's what you have after you've described your pain (especially if you're a young and/or healthy person who stretches and is fairly athletic).

you could not walk on it or get it in a ski boot if it was broken without unreal pain

rest ice and compression (and vitamin I[buprofen]) (RICI)

as to recovery time for me, i was skiing tuckerman ravine in 3-4 weeks... i was walking mostly without pain by 1.5-2 weeks. i'd say if you see no improvement after a week of RICI, then it's time to go to a doc... but if you can bear it for a week to see if theres improvement it might be worth waiting

again... i am NO doctor, and am not making any sort of advice, but our experiences seemed real similar, so i thought you'd benefit from hearing my case and aftermath
