Looking for a point and shoot camera...

I am in the market for a camera and want something that will take good pictures. I want to bring it along skiing, mountain biking etc.... I have been looking at a few Nikon, Canon, and Olympus cameras but I am a newb to the camera world but am willing to learn. Thanks!

So far the general consensus from other sites is that Canon is the way to go. Anyone have any input?

I highly recommend a camera with good image stabilization. You never mentioned a budget which is key in this market. The Panasonic Lumix line has some very good stabilization. You could buy an older one, like a DMC FX12 for less than $200 or the new FX100 for $300ish. It'll save more pictures than you can shake 10 sticks at.

I would say $500 max as far as budget goes.

Given these limitations, look for something with as short a shutter lag as you can find.
This is the worst pain EVER!

I'm assuming you want a P&S due to size?

Otherwise, you can probably find a decent used DSLR & lens (like a D70) in that price range.
I got a Nikon camera...I love to take a photograph...So Mama, don't take my Kodachrome away

Or the G7 to save a few bucks. The changes are barley worth the upgrade unless you need raw.

    10.1 vs 12.1MP
    RAW
    better buffer
    DIGIC III

all for ~$70 more. Buy the G9 - you can find them for <$400. I did.

    G7 2fps FTW

    G9 1.5fps

Still need the extra 2MP? Thought so... G9 only if you need RAW... in theory you could hack RAW functionality into the G7

    Bingo

I'd take 8mp in a G10 if they got 3fps and better performance above iso 400.

I just got a Leica and it is amazing. I've always shot with a nikon D100 and wanted a smaller point a shoot to bring with me on hikes and skiing when i didnt want to carry a SLR. I also wanted to have a full manual ability with a smaller camera and thats where the Leica really shined. Only thing is that i wish there was a view finder but most digital point and shoots don't have them these days and accually the screen is big and ive never had issues just taking pics with it. Quality is the best out there too

Ski with it inside your jacket and battery life will never be an issue.

I'm a Leica lover, but you got sold on something that unfortunately isn't true. Assuming you bought the Leica D-LUX 3 ($600) then you bought a re-badged Panasonic DMC-LX2 ($350.) $250 is a lot of money for a little Leica Badge... internally they are the exact same camera.

I'm looking at buying a Canon PowerShot A570IS. Image Stabilization, 7.1 megapixels, 4x optical zoom, and it's cheap!
