Unhappy bad way to end the season

uggghhhhh......so the GF and I decide to hit my home hill of Alpine on Sat.....she is a boarder usually (and a good one too..), but decided to dust off the skis and boots and give it a go, as conditions were less than ideal, and I had been on her all season to break out the skis again and give them another shot......

First run, right off Summit chair, it's bad vis and grabby, etc....spring slop, about 2 inches over ice hard stuff, and I ski about half way down and stop to turn around and wait for her.........I see her lying on the ground with this terrible look on her face....so I duck walk back up, and check to see what the deal is.....she goes "I just went to make a turn, and my body went one way, and my knee another. I heard a horrible crunching sound, felt a flash of pain, and collapsed"

Well, my heart just sank right there........

flash forward 2 hours to the emergency room @ Truckee General.......doc walks in, looks at her swollen knee, doea a lateral stability test, and says "I think your MCL is toast. And I am also worried about your ACL"

Now I am about to cry....for her, feelign guilty about getting ehr out on skis again, knowing that she was all excitied about going to Belieze next week, doing road rides together this spring, etc etc....

We are going to see an Ortho guy we both know later today that specializes in knees at UCSF, get an MRI, and assess the damage....

    Thumbs down

    Sorry to hear that.

Hopefully, the ortho will have better news than the ER doc.

    Damn, that really sucks.

Best wishes for a positive assesment from the ortho.

    That blows.

For what it's worth, I blew up my MCL on my bike a few years ago, and the thing completely healed itself. Painful, yes. But it's all better now.

That is really too bad! Hopefully the MRI reveals lesser damage! On the brightside, at least she did it at the end of the season and has the spring/summer to repair and get strong for next winter. Hopefully this hasn't turned her off of skiing for good. Best wishes for a good report and quick recovery!

I think her exact words this moring were: "well, that's the last facking time I ever strap those god d%&$ things on again. I am sticking with boarding."......

I had my knee looked at at UCSF earlier this year by a doc there when I badly strained my MCL. Really good doc. Also know the head of orthopedic surgery there personally if you need any recs on docs (how I found the guy who checked out my knee). Hope your GF feels better!

Seldon, my GF works as a NP @ UCSF in the neuro ward.....she is seeing an ortho resident we know today on the side (he will get her a better brace...) to look at her, then get her in with the main knee guy there.....

who is the knee guy you saw?

dont know if you saw this thread, but i tore my ACL 10 days ago at squaw, and am also getting surgery in SF. PM me if she wants to get in touch to compare notes, or for some empathetic understanding.

My roommate is a nurse at UCSF and recommended Dr. Marc Safran, who I saw today. I am also talking to Dr. Lesley Anderson, and I'm very impressed with her.

From one who's going through it simultaneously, I know your GF appreciates your love & support! Best of luck.

Brit, I should put you 2 in touch: My GF is also a nurse (nurse practioner) @ UCSF - I wonder if she knows your roommate?

Anyway, she was snuck-in aftre hourse last night for a quick exam by an ortho intern she knows that works for Dr Canon, the main knee orrtho guy @ UCSF I think....

Anyway, he thinks (hard to tell w/the swelling) that best case, partial tear of MCL, worse case, total tear and partial of ACL....

She will know more when she gets the MRI this week, getts the referal from her primary and sees a knee specialist...

Speaking of..are both Safran and Andersen @ UCSF?
