Jong question: boards for grommets

Hey-

My bro in law is moving to Sydneyand wants to get boards for his kids for Christmas- ages 13 (girl) 9 (girl) and 7 (boy). All good athletes but w/no real surfing experience, other than body surfing. Suggestions on sources/models/etc? he lives in CT and wants them under the tree- moving in Jan. and doesn;t mind shipping them w/ the rest of their earthly belongings..

Depending on where hes from, it would probably be a lot easier and cheaper to get the boards there. But either way, my suggestion is just to get a few soft-tops to start like INT or LiquidShredders in a few different shapes and sizes. Maybe something like a 7' - 7'6" for the older girl and around 6' for the younger two. The younger ones (being the young ones they are) will probably have an easier time on relatively smaller boards whereas the older one will need something bigger to float her and make it easier. Probably good for their first year and a lot cheaper. Tell him when he gets to Sydney he should go to the Northern beaches like Manley and Narrabeen for his own boards.

Damn, to be back in Sydney. I love it there!

Good scoops- thanks! They are goig to be living 3 miles from manly beach. Don't think $ is a real issue, but they are the kind of people who have plenty but make their kids ski in the East so they don;t think that going to A$pen every year is normal, heh.

For the girls, I recommend the Roxy soft top surfboards

My 2 nieces in Hawaii (7 and 4) use these and love it. The best part is that when they're learning and get smashed, the soft boards don't hurt.

For the 7yo grom, the Roxy soft-top is the equivalent of a pink bicycle with a white basket, so he needs something more manly. A single fin board by any decent shaper will suffice.

Sydney surf is fairly crowded. When he moves there I recommend he and his kids join the local Surf Club for access to all sorts of boards, fast-track to "local" status, etc.

I hope he's thinking about getting the Misses a board as well. Nice custom longboard with some sexy colors to get shaped for her when they get to Oz. Lots of shapers on the northern beaches.
