    DVT

Hi new to site and looking to see if anyone ever gotten a (dvt) blood clot in there calf and if so how long till you were able to ski again. I'm on coumadin for at least 6 months if not longer. To top things I also have a blown acl and a torn meniscus which the ortho's won't even touch till the clot is gone.I have been spending alot of time on the couch when I'm off from work and it been driving me crazy. I'm not one to hang out and watch tv. Any words of encouragement is much appreciated thanks.

Never had a clot but have dealt with countless people that have.

Overtime your body will dissolve the clot; the coumadin is just preventing it from getting larger. Since the coumadin is a powerful blood thinner any activity that risks falling and esp. hitting your head needs to be avoided (you dont want a intracerebral bleed) Also keep your diet fairly steady The docs need to adjust the dosage of the coumadin based on how your body metabolizes the coumadin and any foods that have vitamin K will tend to decrease the effectiveness of the medication. This doesn't mean that you should avoid vit. K containing foods but you should try to keep their intake consistent. Call the pharmacist for a list of vit K foods.

The DVT is most likely from a combination of lack of movement (venous stasis) and injury to the wall of the vein. Once the clot is gone, the vessel wall injury resolves and your able to start moving around better you shouldn't have to worry about a recurrence. The docs may have you wear a special foot or leg sleeve that that squeezes your foot/legs after your clot resolves and even after your surgery (if you need surgery). If you develop sudden shortness of breath or sudden sharp chest pain you need to call a doc ASAP. -shouldn?t have to worry about this with a calf DVT but just something to be aware of.

And ultimately just listen to your primary doc, ortho surgeons and pharmacist. They know your injury and are highly trained for what they do. If you have concerns ask them.

Good luck, you?ll do fine, just listen to what the docs and PT tells you.

Thanks for all the info. I was in the hospital for a week when the clots started to move up to lungs and had a hard time breathing and had to be moved to the ICU for a day and a half not much fun. I was recently released from pt from 3 times a week to 1 day a week. I'm get stronger I just wish the blood clot would dissolve a little quicker. I 'm very thankful for the great DR.'s I have and listen and do every they tell me do.

It sounds like you had a rough time and actually ended up throwing an emboli. Glad to here you pulled through that OK.
Just be patient, everybody is different so its difficult to tell how long it will take.
Hint-get rid of the TV and read instead.

A little moto mishap out in the dez. Just trying to save myself from going down I put my leg out on to a rock to straighten after the back end of the bike kicked out and felt my calf really tighten up and knew my knee was spent b/c when I stopped I put my foot down and the bike just fell over on me. I still managed to go another 20+ miles to get back to the start.

I ended up in the hospital do to the first Dr Norm Young misdianosed me with only telling me that my acl was blown and I keep telling him my calf was killing me and it felt very heavy kinda like a pulled musle and he was like it's ok you'll back next for your mri. So now it's a week later and calf and leg looks as big as a watermellon and my foot is so big I can't even put my sneekers on. So after the mri I get sent off to get an ultra sound on my leg and the nurse said if I have to call the dr that means you have to be admited ASAP so sure enough I was on my way for the dvt. BIG THANKS TO DR. NORM YOUNG for NOT lisening to me !!!!!!

So after a week long time share in the hospital and a big Fat Bill thankfully I have insurance. I'm finally in good hands with the ROC center in Reno with DR. Renny Uppal and his PT team and I can't THANK THEM ENOUGH.

So a little up date. I have decided to let up a little on the pt and gym hoping my swelling would go down, but it's still the same my leg seems to get big during the work day and when I get home from work I rest it by elevating it up (above the heart) on the back side of the couch and when I wake up in the am it almost looks the same as my other leg. I sure wish with today's meds and technology I could get something to dissolve the clots faster or to have them removed. I recently talked to someone had a friend die from having their Dr. try to move remove his clots so I don't think I want to go that route however I would like to return to my normal life style which included skiing and racing my dirtbikes and streetriding with my friends. Hopefully Dr. Mark will chime in and give me some good advice.

DTV in the CALF, rather than the POPLITEAL VEIN or the THIGH does not need coumadin, and can be treated simply with nonsteriodals.

When such fellow comes to ACL surgery, which can be done as early as six weeks later, prophylaxis with Lovenox is all that is necessary.

Your Doc must all love skiing. He seems to make mountains out of mole hills.
