When customs asks you for your ID, just step on the gas. Post Guantanamo TR when you get back.

My friend has two DUI's but he is in the opposite situation (going from Canada to the US) and I am not sure exactly how it works but his lawyer has advised him not to try and cross, because if you do then the americans will have that on their record forever, and something about it making it more difficult in the future. Versus once your off the hook and get your license back then it doesn't come up and won't go in their records? Does anyone understand this? It kind of went over my head, perhaps someone could explain. Thanks

lets put it this way i have been to BC four times, 3x i was let in no prob, 1 x had to spend $200 for a TRP.

went to montreal 3x, first had to pay the $200, last may...come on in, last friday...5 hours of sitting in immigration and watching countless families from every ethnic background be allowed entry and having to surrender my passport so i could stay a $150 a night shit hole Comfort Inn only to fly back to Denver, i am at wits end and just trying to figure this shit out.

Such shit, I had a legit reason to be there, i was booked at the W, etc, etc.

Going to whistler next month, same program and i just cant afford to have this happen again.

    help a brobra out!!!!

By the law it's the conviction, but border guards will ask if you've been arrested. You need to know your rights and simply answer that you've never been convicted of a crime. I'd even print out the page I linked to and have it with you so they'll know they can't jack you around.

I had a buddy that they wouldn't let get into canada because of a DUI. If it's happened within the last 10 years, then im pretty sure they won't let you in, but thats just what i've heard.

You seem like a real smart dude. Please DIAF.

So.... you broke the law in your country, got busted and feel inconvenienced because another country might not want you to "come on in, brobra, and enjoy your vacation".

Yeah, yeah, I know, it was just a DUI.

    You are so fucking lazy.

You have to fill out paper work, ask for permission and admit your DUI before you cross. My friend had to make her newly minted husband do that shitty paperwork for their honeymoon. Pain in the ass...and months in advance.

And I think you need to repeat it everytime.
They let you in, but it's a pain. And it should be.

Better start now or you will not be getting in this winter.

DUI is considered a felony in Canada and they've stepped up the criminal background checks since 9/11. The border guards are linked up to the FBI database that will show ANY arrest regardless of conviction or expungement from your record. The feds don't forget and the Canucks will make you prove there was no conviction. If there is a conviction, don't lie as they will know and you will become persona non grata in the great white north.

Depending on how long ago the conviction was, you may qualify for a letter of rehabilitation which allows you to enter from there on out. I think its ten yrs from the date in which your sentence is completed; meaning when you paid the fine or got out of jail. The letter only costs $250, but the back log can take months to process. If you don't qualify for the letter, you're basically screwed until enough time passes that you do.

US border patrol does a bang up job denying Canadians with pot infractions (not criminal in Canada) entry into the US, so theres a bit of your typical cross border tit for tat going on and they will show you no love. Glen Plake was turned around at the border last season for his troubles back in the 80's. He was on his way to host at the Whistler ski & snowboard festival and even the good people at W/B and Tourism Whistler were unable to get him in. Unless your president Bush forget about it without that letter.
