IMO, if cost is the issue, i'd be choosing between the 20d and the 40d. The 30 didn't have enough improvements over the 20 to justify the increase in cost. OTOH, the 40d has some very nice improvements, such as a bigger viewfinder, 6.5fps w/ a 17 frame RAW buffer and (supposedly, i haven't tried it) better AF system.

edit: you can get a used 20d on KEH for under 600. i went that route a while back and was not disappointed.
