Totally diferent animals.
AFAIK, the 914 Axe is a regular, mostly plastic 914 with a tab adjust heel track on the "AXE" plate, closer to a 912 than a 916 but with SOME metal reinforcing in key spots.
The 914LAB has the all metal heelpiece assembly from the 916 including worm screw adjust heel track and five hole mounting, just with a 14 spring. Mine also have a metal track (NOT a riser plate) connecting toe and heelpiece with a floating heelpiece to allow for more natural ski flex (ie: no flat spot). The toepiece baseplate on mine are also metal. So the only difference between them and the 916 is the toe piece upper assembly, spring housing and wings. The wings are the 912 variety, simultanous adjust, not independent like on the 916 (read: simultaneous loosen while skiing).
That said, 914LABS weigh almost as much as a 916 too. Regular 914s are substantially lighter.
Hope this helps JONG!
