Great list so far. Also:

Gary Gilmore. Superb technically, one of the lost greats. Mostly did blues stuff. Usually played with JJ Cale and Taj Mahal, I think, but was big on playing his bass as melodic lead.

Willie Dixon. Not sure if he can be considered a great in terms of instrumental prowess, as he was too busy writing notes, but he was certainly a titan in terms of his influence. Robert Plant built that estate in Scotland with those owed royalties.

John Entwistle. In the end there's only one bass king in the rock idiom, and that's The Ox.
