Back in the day, there were a lot of great albums, records (dating myself, I know, but if you can't get a date with yourself...) that were quality from top to bottom, albums that qualified as GREAT. Easy choices are Dark Side of the Moon, Eat a Peach, Sargeant Peppers, Pet Sounds, Kaya, Who's Next, etc. etc. I could come up with twenty others in ten minutes.
But a friend of mine who happens to work for a major label (not boastin', just explainin') said to me a while back that there hasn't been a great ALBUM (concept to continuity, lyrics to likeability, etc), for at least fifteen years. I couldn't refute him.
I can't think of one album that I would qualify as GREAT in forever. There's been a lot of great songs, but is there an album in the past fifteen years that you would qualify as great?
Closest I could come up with on short notice was Digital Underground - Sex Packets. It hangs together, it has a lot of talent, but...nahhhhh.
Anybody?
Sorry, U2 suggestions are immediately disqualified.
Loverboy
Rush
Between the mountains, music, beer and bud, Canada ranks right up there with some of our other states for overall quality of life.
My vote would be going for Sublime - 40oz to Freedom. Brad Nowell crammed more styles into that album then most bands could fit into their career. He raged from punk to reggae to hip hop. He sampled which most bands don't do now days. Some critics would place Robbin' the Hood above 40oz but I think 40oz is a little better due to the fact that it is mostly about his drig addiction. Although STP fits more styles then any band could even think to produce. To further the pure genuis of either record "Falling Idols" showed how fuckling hard Brad could wail on guitar. Either album is pure 100% unfiltered goodness.
Hey, you can check out any time you like, but you can never leave...reminds me of something, some internet board or something.Originally posted by Blurred Elevens
You said you'd name 20 others in 10 minutes...let's see'em...and don't give us that Hotel California bullshit.
I didn't say I would, I said I could. Not too much brain power working right now, you gonna hold me to it?
no bad songs on :
Palace - Viva Lost Blues
De La - Bhaloone mind state
tortoise - TNT

No, cause the last time I heard that stupid fucking song, I was in Hawaii. People started waving lighters around....I rolled my eyes, slammed the pitcher of beer that was on the table and dragged my girlfriend by the hand out of there. It was an okay song the first 5 million times I heard it.Originally posted by iceman

I'm sure Zeppelin and the Doors are on your list....thanks for sparing me.
I had that CD, briefly, before trading it in. The music lacked passion, at least to this rat's ears.Originally posted by Sublime

Your dog just ate an avocado!
I will not stick up for the Pixies. I will stick up for Appetite for Destruction. Best. album. ever.Originally posted by iceman
Heh, okay, play that, "Never Mind the Bollocks" , the first Van Halen Album and "Live at Leeds" in a row, and get back to me.
You should at least be sticking up for the Pixies, Bosstown kid.
Go put on your white high tops and jam out to some VH.
radiohead- ok computer
also its going to take some time for the truly great records to float to the top and all the shit music surrounding them to sink to the bottom. How many times did a new stones or zeppelin album come out and instantly you knew it was going to be a classic(just guessing here, maybe you did)? it takes time for a good record to be appreciated

No doubt. Fifteen years seems like a reasonable amount of time for this to happen, though, doesn't it?Originally posted by ripley ripper

No Doors, Brett. Always hated them. Also no Zep, although some songs are classics.
Wait, I'll do your list (I guess it's my list, actually) but how far back can I start?
Let me say something...Metallica-The Black Album sucked fucking dog ass!
It's a true story that before that album was produced, MTV approached both them and Slayer. MTV asked them both to tone it down to get play on MTV.....Boom!! Metallica was all over MTV with Enter Sandman, nothing Else Matters, etc.....Slayer didn't sell out. I love And Justice for All and all Metallica before that, but after the Black Album, haven't bought a Metallica album since...fuck em!
live stuff is where they throbbed....great as in forever? I don't think soOriginally posted by Viva

RHCP; nothing's better than Mother's Milk IMO. I feel their music has leveled off, still good, but I don't think it's gotten better.
There was some great music in the early-mid nineties, but most of it I can't listen to anymore.
I still listen to Pete Rock and CL Smooth, The Main Ingredient. Even if you don't like Hip Hop, I think you have to give Digable Planets some credit. I really dislike rap these days, but these two still stick out. Both great albums front to back.
The beauty of music 30-40 years ago was that rock was still growing and people could still do something new. Now, it's tough to be unique. Hip Hop is an exception since it still very new, but it doesn't get any credit.
I'm really having trouble finding anything good recently that isn't at least 10-15 years old, so I tend to agree with Ice. I fell in love with the White Stripes when I first heard them, but I've worn them out...something I've haven't managed to do w/ a lot of older music (read: Bob Marley).
Basically just rambling here, but I'll try to think of something.
Remind me. We'll send him a red cap and a Speedo.
