    Santa Barbara mags?

    Hey Gang,

The lady and I are moving to Santa Barbara. She got a great job offer, it sounds like a fun change of pace and I'll be a bit closer to my family.

My question: For searching for a rental home (yeah, I know it won't be cheap) is craigslist the only game in town? I know there are two newspapers, too, and we've checked their classifieds out. Anything else you guys use? Websites or agencies you can recommend?

We're headed down next weekend to look for places. Ideally, we want someplace in Carpinteria but beggars can't be choosers. Any tips?

    Thanks!

I've used cragislist but it isn't the 'show in town'. I'll check with friends on how they have found there places and try to remember the other place that I used. Oh, this is it....http://www.preferredrental.com/rentpgs/contactprs.php

Carp is fine. Just curious, why there? Where will the lady be working? Santa Barbara isn't a big place. Word of mouth and referrals work well. Obviously, Santa Barbara is expensive.

I live downtown. Getting to Rincon or Goleta to surf isn't bad. Still, I don't have a 'spot at the end of the street' to surf, but I do have 'all things downtown' within a walk. The whole area really is pretty compact. Nothing is far way.

PM me with any particular questions.

Yeah, it's final. I can do my job anywhere and she's the real breadwinner under this roof. She'll have to go down there within a couple of weeks to start working but I'll be up here till Christmas or so dealing with the piles of crap we've accumulated. Hope to get some NW turns in before I head down there, too.

Or you can do what more and more Santa Barbarians are doing, and live in Ventura. What used to be an easy commute is getting more difficult all the time as traffic increases.

I would recomend staying away from a commute ,if possible. if your wife works in Carp live in Carp,SB live in SB . That being said stay away from Goleta, not too much soul. Traffic sucks on the 101 especially during rush hour. good luck finding a rental, there is plenty out there ,just pricey. welcome to Santa Bruta!!

Gotta say I'm a little jealous of the surf you'll see. I spent alot of time in ventura and SB surfing and miss it something bad. LOVED ventura but usually surfed rincon. good luck have fun.

If you need to commute, just make sure it's in the right direction. I live in Goleta and commute down to Carp, it's ~20mins and going south in the morning there's no traffic. Same goes for the evening commute as well, except for summer Fridays as tourists make their way into town. Commute from Ventura is pretty much a shit show, bumper to bumper every morning. However if the job is in Carp, it's actually not too bad a commute. Our company is probably split 50/50 between those that live in SB or Ventura as we are on the very south end of Carp.

Goleta isn't so bad, depending where you are. I'm a 5min bike ride to a beach with surf, walking distance to a couple decent bars and plentiful Mexican food. I wouldn't mind living in SB though either, just haven't found a better place then mine that's made me want to move. Living in carp wouldn't be too bad, it's just a small town and you have to end up driving into Sb for a lot of things. If you found a nice place in the foothills there though I imagine it would be a nice place to live.

It's an expensive but nice place to live. Mammoth is a bit of a trek, but still not too bad. Surf is good and fun local trails. If you like eating local, fresh food it's great too, as the weekly farmer's markets are well stocked. Just got back from the downtown farmer's market actually and ended up with a peking duck, oysters, mussels, beef shanks, a chicken, and a bunch of fresh veggies to feed us for the next few days. Where are you moving from?

Thanks Pura Vida..that's good to know about the commute. 20 minutes isn't too bad, actually. We're moving from Seattle. We have two dogs so I know we won't be able to be too choosy. I think we'll be headed down there next weekend to see what we can find.

I think PV was saying that it's 20 minutes for him without traffic. WITH traffic, 101 is bumper to bumper all the way through Montecito. It's not the end of the world, but commuting on surface streets or on your bike in Santa Barbara/Goleta is a much more pleasant start to the day. Good luck!

In the a.m I commute Goleta --> Carp, traffic is pretty much non existent at 6:40am, 20min from old town Goleta to the office
p.m. Carp --> Goleta 20-25min, little to no traffic, but nothing insane.

Do this in reverse and it's a total shit show.

    6:40?!?! That's early! I'm impressed.

I'll keep you guys posted on where we end up. Looking forward to meeting some of you down there, too... keep the tips coming if you can... we need to figure out everything (vets for the dogs, cool bars to hang out in, the works).

I work a 9/80 schedule, so yeah get up a bit earlier, but the 3-day weekend every other week does not suck at all.

Let me know where you end up, I know a lot of the vets in SB/Ventura.

Where is the wife's job? SB or Carp? The commute going north is not too bad before 8AM, but if you are on the road at 8:01 it can suck. Renting a house in SB with dogs can be hard. It is hard enough in Ventura, but there is usually more to choose from, but then you are back to the commute thang.
